TCU stars, promising pitchers could highlight draft

The Draft Report is back for the third week and, as promised, will take a look at high school and college players alike.

In this week's report, we take a long look at the red-hot Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University, a raw college lefty new to the elite scene, a college hitter considered to be the best in the nation but is currently struggling, two high school right-handers who can light up a radar gun and yet another talented prep-level third baseman. Kevin Ahrens, SS/3B, Memorial HS, Houston: Though a shortstop in high school, he will likely play third at the next level, adding yet another talented prepster at the hot corner in this draft class. Complete Report.

Jake Arrieta, RHP, TCU: Arrieta tossed six shutout innings and struck out eight against Oral Roberts on Friday, showeing the makings of a durable workhorse. Complete Report.

Blake Beavan, RHP, Irving HS, Texas: He only threw four innings in a scrimmage-type setting, but his fastball was electric in his first outing of the year. Complete Report.

Sam Demel, RHP, TCU: The Texas Christian closer was very sharp in getting the save of Arrieta's victory with 1 2/3 innings on Friday night. Complete Report.

Michael Main, RHP, Deland HS, Florida: Battling cold and damp conditions in his debut, Main still managed to show good mound presence and a fastball in the mid-90s. Complete Report.

Aaron Poreda, LHP, USF: Poreda has added a lot of velocity to his fastball and it was on display (5.2 IP, 7 K's) for the somewhat raw lefty on Friday against UC Riverside. Complete Report.

Andrew Walker, C, TCU: Walker is a strong, durable backstop who went 4-for-11 at the plate in TCU's sweep of Oral Roberts over the weekend. Complete Report.

Matt Wieters, C, Georgia Tech: Easily the best college hitter in the draft, Wieters has been struggling a bit at the plate, though he did go 4-11 with his second home run of the year over the weekend against Illinois-Chicago. Complete Report.

In other draft-related news... Vanderbilt's David Price had his start moved back because of illness, then promptly returned and struck out 12 batters on Sunday. ... Rice lefty Joe Savery went another four innings, allowing one run without a walk to go along with four strikeouts, as he comes back slowly from shoulder surgery. ... Clemson closer Daniel Moskos picked up a win in 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief over two games. ... After opening some eyes at the Houston College Classic with some long home runs, ASU OF Matt Spencer went 3-for-12 at the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Ariz.
