Red Sox infielder Travis out for season

What seemed to be a promising 2016 season for Sam Travis is suddenly over.

The No. 7 Red Sox prospect will miss the remainder of the year after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee, Boston announced Monday.

During a rundown play in Triple-A Pawtucket's 8-2 loss to Indianapolis on Sunday, the 22-year-old first baseman was injured. He left the game with two out in the third inning.

Travis was batting .272 with six homers and stands tied for fourth in the International League with 29 RBIs. A second-round pick in 2014, Travis has moved quickly through the Red Sox system, splitting last year between Class A Advanced Salem and Double-A Portland. He led the organization with a .307 batting average and 78 RBIs.

"Sam's very consistent in everything he does," Red Sox director of player development Ben Crockett told MiLB.com in October. "He's not high, he's not low. He's very competitive whenever he's in the box. That kept him steady and allowed him to perform at both levels he played at this season."

Though no date is set for the Illinois native's surgery, he is expected to be ready for the 2017 season. Travis is currently blocked at the big league level by Hanley Ramirez at first base, though Ramirez spent some time last season in the outfield.

Travis has a lifetime .303/.364/.453 slash line in 245 Minor League games.
