Woodford Named Cardinals MiLB Pitcher of the Month
PEORIA, IL - The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Friday that Peoria Chiefs right-hander Jake Woodford has been named the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May.
Woodford made five starts in May going 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA as he struck out 26 batters over 31 innings of work. He posted a 1.03 WHIP for the month and held Midwest League opponents to a .198 batting average. Woodford led all Cardinals Minor Leaguers in ERA for May, ranked 2nd in Avg. against, 3rd in WHIP and sixth in strikeouts. He also finished May with the 5th best ERA in the Midwest League and was ranked top 10 in wins and Avg. against. Overall on the season the 19-year-old is 3-3 with a 2.14 RA in nine starts as he has struck out 39 in 54 2/3 innings. He was the fifth youngest Opening Day starter in Peoria Chiefs history when he took the ball in Burlington on April 7.
"Jacob was effective in five starts in May for Peoria, a 3-0 record in 31 innings with hitters managing only a .198 average against him," said Cardinals Director of Player Development Gary LaRocque
Woodford began May with a no-decision against Bowling Green May 3 as he allowed two rons on five hits over 5 2/3 innings while striking out seven. From there Woodford did not allow an earned run for 21 straight innings until his final start of the month on Monday. He beat Beloit on the road May 11 with a one-hit effort over 5 1/3 innings in game one of a double header as he struck out five. Woodford won at Kane County on May 18 as he allowed an unearned run on six hits over six innings. He earned his third win in a row six days later against the Cougars at home with a career-high eight innings of shutout baseball as he struck out five. His streak of not allowing an earned run ended on Memorial Day in Quad Cities as he allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits over six innings with six strikeouts. He was in line for his fourth straight win before the bullpen blew a save in the seventh inning as Woodford took a no-decision.
Woodford was the 39th overall selection in last June's draft as a 1st round Supplemental selection and he went 1-0 with a 2.39 ERA in eight games and five starts for the Gulf Coast League Cardinals. A Tampa, Florida native, Woodford struck out 21 batters in 26 1/3 innings and passed up a scholarship to the University of Florida to sign with the Cardinals.
Woodford is the first Chiefs player to be honored as a Player or Pitcher of the Month by the Cardinals this season. Last year the Chiefs had Luis Perdomo (May) and Austin Gomber (August) named as Cardinals Pitchers of the Month.
