South Bend Takes Two from West Michigan in Doubleheader
SOUTH BEND IN - The South Bend Cubs got back on track Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of the West Michigan Whitecaps by scores of 10-3 and 2-1.
In game 1 South Bend broke West Michigan's 10-game winning streak and halted their own five-game losing streak with a 10-3 victory.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Cubs scored four-times thanks to an RBI hit by Donnie Dewees, an RBI ground out by Eloy Jimenez and a two-run home run by Ian Rice off his college teammate at Houston Kyle Dowdy.
Matt Rose went deep for South Bend leading off the second inning to spark a two-run frame and allowed the Cubs to take a 6-1 lead.
Cubs starter Carson Sands lasted three innings allowing four hits and three runs. In relief Pedro Araujo (1-0) earned the win after three scoreless innings.
South Bend held a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Dewees extended the lead with a RBI triple scoring Carlos Sepulveda who scored three times in the game.
Run scoring hits by Sepulveda, Higgins and Dewees in the sixth to wrap up the scoring in a 10-3 win.

South Bend took game two by a score of 2-1.
Just like in game one, Ian Rice belted a first inning two-run home run off Fernandez Perez to give South Bend a 2-0 advantage.
Cubs pitcher Casey Bloomquist, making his first start of the year, went a professional career high five innings giving up only one run and earned the win.
Craig Brooks got the final six outs for his third save of the season.
With the two wins, South Bend has tied West Michigan for first place in the Midwest League's Eastern Division.
