Sky Sox Silenced 3-0 In New Orleans
For the second straight game, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox could manage little on offense as they again fell to the New Orleans Zephyrs by the score of 3-0 at Zephyr Park on Sunday afternoon.
Milwaukee Brewers rehabber Corey Knebel (0-0, 0.00) started the game on the mound for the Sky Sox. In his only inning of work, Knebel struck out two of three batters he faced in a scoreless first inning. He will look to rejoin the Brewers roster in the near future.
In the second, scheduled starting pitcher Jorge Lopez (1-4, 6.04) entered for the Sky Sox. The second batter he faced, Tomas Telis, hit a solo home run to right field to put the Zephyrs on the board first and give his team an early 1-0 lead.
Lopez settled down after allowing the home run, keeping the Zephyrs off the board for the next three innings. But in the sixth, the Zephyrs added to the lead on a sacrifice fly from Destin Hood that scored Austin Nola to make it 2-0 New Orleans.
On the mound for New Orleans, Dylan Axelrod (3-2, 4.21) had a strong start. He held the Sky Sox scoreless for six innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out three to earn his third victory of the season.
In the bottom of the seventh, a fielder's choice ground out from Brady Shoemaker scored Matt Juengel with the third New Orleans run. A few batters later, Lopez was pulled from the game as David Goforth entered. With the bases loaded and two outs, Goforth induced a ground out from Robert Andino to keep the deficit at three.
In five and two thirds innings, Lopez allowed three earned runs on five hits while striking out five. He suffered his fourth of the season.
Greg Nappo held the Sky Sox scoreless in the eighth, and Raudel Lazo worked around a Michael Reed double to pitch a scoreless eighth to keep the Zephyrs ahead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Goforth used a ground ball double play to get through the inning unharmed.
Cody Ege came on and pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the season and give the Zephyrs their second straight 3-0 win over the Sky Sox.
The back-to-back shutout losses marks the ninth time in Sky Sox history that has happened. All nine instances have been on the road.
For the Sky Sox, Michael Reed had a pair of hits while Will Middleboooks, Orlando Arcia, and Josmil Pinto also recorded hits in the loss.
In game three of the series tomorrow night, Hiram Burgos (2-4, 4.53) is scheduled to get the start for the Sky Sox against Chris Narveson (1-2, 4.79). First pitch at Zephyr Park is scheduled for 5 p.m.
