Where Are They Now?
Draft Week is upon us and as the baseball world readies to see who will become new Yankees, we decided to visit memory lane to take a look back at the Yankees first picks from the past five years.
2015: James Kaprielian. Kaprielian pitched at UCLA and was drafted in the first round with the 16th overall pick of the draft. He signed for $2.65 million and split the 2015 campaign between the Gulf Coast League Yankees and the Staten Island Yankees. He started 2016 with the Tampa Yankees.
2014: Jacob Lindgren. Lindgren pitched at Mississippi State before being drafted in the second round with the 55th overall pick of the draft. He signed for $1.1 million and quickly worked his way up the farm system playing at four different levels in 2014. He split 2015 with the Scranton-Wilkes Barre RailRiders and the parent club. This year, he has been in Tampa, partly to continue building his arm after having surgery on it last season to remove a bone spur.
2013: Eric Jagielo. Jagielo played third base at the University of Notre Dame before being drafted in the first round with the 26th overall pick of the draft. He signed for $1.8 million and spent 2013 with both Gulf Coast League Yankees teams and Staten Island. In 2014, he played seven games with the GCL Yanks before being promoted to Tampa. Jagielo spent all of 2015 with the Trenton Thunder but was traded to the Cincinnati Reds along with Rookie Davis, Tony Renda, and Caleb Cotham in exchange for Aroldis Chapman. Jagielo is currently with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
2012: Ty Hensley. Hensley had committed to play baseball at Ole Miss but decided to sign with the Yankees instead after they selected him in the first round with the 30th overall pick. He signed for $1.2 million and spent the 2012 season with the GCL Yankees. He missed the entire 2013 season due to surgery on both hip labrums. In 2014, he split time between the GCL Yankees and Staten Island. During spring training in 2015, he felt pain in his arm and missed the whole season due to Tommy John surgery. While rehabbing he felt pain in his arm again and will have a second Tommy John surgery in 2016.
2011: Dante Bichette Jr. Bichette was drafted in the CA round with the 51st overall pick of the draft. He signed for $750,000. His father spent 13 years in the majors playing for the Angels, Brewers, Rockies, Reds, and Red Sox. Bichette Jr. spent his first season in the Yankees organization with the GCL Yanks and Staten Island. The next two seasons were with the Charleston RiverDogs. In 2014 and 2015, he split time between Tampa and Trenton. He started the 2016 season in Trenton.
2010: Cito Culver. Culver had committed to play shortstop at the University of Maryland but chose to sign with the Yankees instead for $954,000. He was drafted in the first round with the 32nd overall pick. He has steadily worked his way up the farm system spending his first season with the GCL Yankees and Staten Island. He spent all of 2011 with Staten Island and all of 2012 with the Charleston RiverDogs. In 2013, he split time between Charleston and Tampa. He spent 2014 with Tampa and split 2015 between Trenton and Scranton-Wilkes Barre. He started 2016 playing for Trenton.
