Strong pitching, Brown homer keys in Wings win

Relievers post three scoreless innings for Diamond
April 27, 2011
Matt Brown's home run in the fifth inning provided the Red Wings with a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Bisons Wednesday afternoon at Frontier Field. Rochester starter Scott Diamond combined with three relievers for an outstanding pitching effort. The series continues Thursday night, with a special 2-for-1 ticket promotion and a $2 Genny and Genny Light happy hour.

Diamond struck out eight Bisons in 5 1/3 innings back on April 21; in Wednesday's game, he faced the challenge of some hot hitters in the Bisons lineup including Kirk Nieuwenhuis (16-game hitting streak), Ruben Tejada (six games) and Luis Hernandez (six games). In the first inning Wednesday, Diamond recorded a 1-2-3 inning that included Tejada and Nieuwenhuis.

The Wings had out-scored opponents 22-16 in the first two innings entering play Thursday, and threatened early against Buffalo's Josh Stinson. Lead-off hitter Brandon Roberts doubled and Brian Dinkelman walked, but Stinson got a strikeout, fly out and ground out to escapt the scoring threat

Two more Wings got on base in the bottom of the second, with a Dustin Martin single and a Ben Revere bunt hit, but a double play helped Stinson get out of the inning.

Buffalo took the lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings, on an RBI single from Jesus Feliciano and a solo home run by Lucas Duda.

The Wings tallied a pair to tie the score in the fourth, then went ahead in the fifth. RBI hits by Revere and Rene Rivera made it a 2-2 game, then Brown blasted a solo homer run off the Santa Fe Salsa pitch speed sign in the left field bullpen to give Rochester a 3-2 lead.

Diamond turned in another fine start, allowing just two hits over six innings. Anthony Slama came on to pitch in the seventh inning, and got defensive help from his teammates immediately. Duda was sent home trying to score from first base on an extra base hit by Valentino Pascucci, but Duda was nailed at the plate for the second out of the inning. Dinkelman's relay throw from Rene Tosoni was a strike to home, with Rivera tagging out Duda to protect the lead.

With two runners on base and only one out in the eighth inning, Phil Dumatrait was summoned out of the bullpen to face Nieuwenhuis. Dumatrait got a first pitch foul pop out from Nieuwenhuis for the second out, and a comebacker to the mound from Ronny Paulino to escape the jam. Alex Burnett finished the game on the mound for Rochester, combining with Dumatrait to strike out the side in the ninth.

NOTES: Wings pitchers ended the three Buffalo hitting streaks Wednesday (Tejada, Nieuwenhuis, and Hernandez)...Jeff Bailey, currently in a 0-for-31 slump, had the day off... Including Wednesday’s game, Brian Dinkelman and Rene Tosoni are the only two Red Wings players on the roster who have played in every game this season. Since 1988, only five players have played 135 or more games in a season (Danny Clyburn 137 games in 1997, Garrett Jones 140 in 2006 and 138 in 2008, Denard Span 139 games in 2007, Jason Pridie 138 games in 2008, and Brian Dinkelman 137 games in 2010).

This Day in Red Wings History: On April 27, 1992, Red Wing pitcher Arthur Rhodes struck out ten batters in six shutout innings, as Rochester defeated Syracuse 6-0 at Silver Stadium. Third baseman Bobby Dickerson led Rochester offensively with two his, two rbis, and one run.

This Day in IL Baseball History: 2006 – Highly touted Phillies pitching prospect Cole Hamels makes his Triple-A debut in Norfolk as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons take on the Tides. It doesn’t take Hamels long to establish himself. He strikes out six straight Tides between the 1 st and 3 rd innings, and later strikes out five in a row between the 6 th and 7 th frames. By night’s end, Hamels has collected 14 punchouts, one shy of the team’s all-time mark in a 5-0 victory. The southpaw would be equally impressive in his next two starts, and by May 7 he was 2-0 with a 0.39 ERA, 36 strikeouts, and just one walk in his first three appearances at the Triple-A level. Not surprisingly, he was called to the Majors where he made his debut in Cincinnati on May 12. Hamels was named the International League Pitcher-of-the-Week in each of the two weeks of his Triple-A career.
