Hoskins and Giolito Win Weekly Awards

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of June 6th through June 12th:

Reading Fightin Phils first baseman Rhys Hoskins has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of June 6th-June 12th. The 23-year old batted .467 (14-for-30) with three doubles, four home runs, 10 RBIs, six runs scored, two walks and a .967 slugging percentage in seven games last week. Hoskins, who is a native of Sacramento, California, had at least one hit in six of the seven games he played in last week and had multiple hits in five of those games, including going 3-for-3 with a three-run homer in a 12-8 win over Altoona on Saturday night. The 6'4", 225 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in hits (14), total bases (29), RBIs (10), slugging percentage (.967) and OPS (1.482) last week and tied for the lead in home runs (4). He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in extra-base hits (7-2nd), batting average (.467-3rd), on-base percentage (.515-4th), runs scored (6-tied 4th) and doubles (3-tied 7th). Hoskins currently ranks second in the league in homers (16) and third in RBIs (46) while batting .278 in 59 games for the Fightins this season. Rhys, who entered the season rated by MLB.com as the 19th best prospect in the Philadelphia organization, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fifth round of the 2014 draft out of Sacramento State.

Lucas Giolito, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Harrisburg Senators, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 6th-June 12th. The 6'6", 255 lb. hurler started one game for the Senators last week and had a record of 1-0 with 12 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Giolito, who is a native of Santa Monica, California, made his lone start of the week on Friday night against the visiting Akron RubberDucks and gave up two unearned runs on four hits and one walk over seven innings to earn the win in Harrisburg's 6-2 victory. He finished the game with a career-high 12 strikeouts, including a stretch between the third and sixth innings where he struck out eight out of 10 batters. With his performance last week Giolito improved his record to 5-2 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.64, which ranks fifth in the league. The 21-year old tied for the league lead in ERA (0.00) last week and also finished ranked among the weekly league leaders in wins (1-tied 3rd), strikeouts (12-tied 4th) and WHIP (0.71-tied 6th). Lucas, who is rated by MLB.com as the top prospect in all of Minor League Baseball, was selected by the Washington Nationals in the first round with the 16th overall pick of the 2012 draft out of Harvard-Westlake High School in Studio City, California.
