Bregman, Barreto buoy Texas All-Stars
While so much talk the past two weeks has been about the 2016 Draft, last year's No. 2 overall pick continues to build a resume that should be the envy of those about to enter the pro ranks.
Astros top prospect and Corpus Christi slugger Alex Bregman was named to the Texas League South Division All-Star roster as starting shortstop on Tuesday. Fellow top 100 prospects Franklin Barreto (Midland), David Paulino (Corpus Christi), Matt Chapman (Midland) and Alex Verdugo (Tulsa) were also tapped to play in the Texas League All-Star Game, which will take place June 28 in Springfield, Missouri.
Bregman, who is ranked as the No. 18 overall prospect by MLB.com, has been one of the Minor Leagues' best hitters in his first full professional season. His .999 OPS and 183 wRC+ are both tops among Double-A hitters. Overall, the 22-year-old shortstop has hit .313/.411/.589 -- leading the Texas League in all three categories -- with 13 homers and 42 RBIs in 50 games for the Hooks and has walked more times (28) than he has struck out (20). There have been calls for the LSU product to climb quickly to Houston, and the Astros have shown signs of obliging those calls by giving Bregman seven starts at third base, where he wouldn't be blocked by reigning AL Rookie of the Year Carlos Correa.
But in Springfield, Bregman will get the start at short, and he'll be paired with another impressive young player in A's top prospect Barreto, who was named the South Division's starting second baseman. MLB.com's No. 19 overall prospect has made only 17 of his 58 starts at the keystone but moves over to get both his and Bregman's offensive abilities in the South lineup. The 20-year-old has struggled at times, producing a .230/.291/.351 line with the RockHounds, but ranks third in the circuit with 14 steals.
Midland third baseman Chapman (No. 98) gives the South infield three top 100 prospects and brings a league-leading 15 home runs. Paulino (No. 99) has made a great case to be the side's starting pitcher in Springfield with his 1.73 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 60 strikeouts in 52 innings for Corpus Christi.
Tulsa outfielder Alex Verdugo (No. 94) is the only top 100 prospect listed on the initial North Division roster and enters Tuesday with a .282/.339/.455 line and eight homers in 55 games, but that doesn't mean his squad will lack firepower. The North also counts Springfield outfielders Harrison Bader (.303 average, 13 homers) and Cal Towey (.402 OBP) among its ranks.
