Shorebirds Sweep Savannah with 7-5 Win
Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (13-9) used a four-run sixth inning en route to a 7-5 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats (7-14) on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds have won eight consecutive games, their longest winning streak since the 2006 season when they won nine in a row between May 19 and 27. The Shorebirds hit eight home runs during the five-game series. They also recorded their first five-game series since at the least the 2004 season.
The Sand Gnats were the first to strike in the second inning. Robbie Shields hit a one out solo homer to give the 'Gnats a 1-0 lead.
They extended the lead in the fourth. Robbie Shields drew a two out walk and stole second base. Then, Blake Forsythe doubled to give the Sand Gnats a 2-0 advantage.
The Shorebirds responded with a run in the fourth inning. Michael Ohlman was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Mychal Givens hit a double to the wall in right field to cut the deficit to 2-1.
In the sixth inning, the Shorebirds used a four-run inning to take their first lead of the night. Adam Gaylord singled and Ohlman walked. Then, Justin Dalles blasted a three-run homer over the right-center field wall to give the 'Birds a 4-2 lead. After a Givens single, Steve Bumbry hit an RBI single to stretch the lead to 5-2.
The Shorebirds added two more runs in the seventh inning. Brenden Webb doubled down the left field line to score Ohlman and Dalles.
Savannah scored two runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth inning before David Walters picked up his seventh save of the season.
Shorebirds starter Luis Noel (2-1) earned the win in six strong innings. Noel allowed just five hits and two runs. He struck out five and walked just one.
The Shorebirds open a four-game series with the Charleston RiverDogs on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
