Sands Joins Knights, Three Roster Moves Announced
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- The Charlotte Knights announced three roster moves today, including the addition of outfielder Jerry Sands, who officially joins the Knights today after being outrighted by the Chicago White Sox. Charlotte's active roster is set at 25 players with the moves.
A product of nearby Catawba College, Sands was designated for assignment by the Chicago White Sox on June 7. The 28-year-old hit .236 (13-for-55) with one home run and seven RBIs in 24 games with the White Sox this season. He was signed by the White Sox as a free agent on December 23, 2015. He was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 25th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.
Infielder Ryan Leonards, who appeared in three games with the Charlotte Knights this season and hit .167 (1-for-6), was assigned back to Winston-Salem (High-A). Leonards returns to the Dash, where he appeared in 15 games earlier this season and hit .191 (9-for-47) with eight runs scored, one double, one triple, one home run and five RBIs. A native of Lafayette, LA, he has also appeared in two games with Double-A Birmingham this year, where he went 1-for-6 at the plate. He was originally selected in the 21st round of the June 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Louisiana Lafayette.
In one other roster move today, catcher Omar Narvaez, who was placed on the Temporary Inactive List on June 15, was activated off the list today. He is hitting .248 (25-for-101) with one home run and eight RBIs in 30 games with the Knights this season.
The Knights and Indians will continue their series tonight with a 6:05 p.m. game from BB&T Ballpark. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and pre-game radio coverage starts at 5:50 p.m. on ESPN Charlotte 730 AM and CharlotteKnights.com. Saturday's game will also be broadcast live on My12 WMYT. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will be joined by Knights radio broadcaster Mike Pacheco and Charlotte 49ers head baseball coach Loren Hibbs in the booth.
