B-Royals Set To Battle Kernersville On Tuesday
Burlington, NC - The 2016 Burlington Royals will take the field for the first time on Tuesday when they host the Kernersville Bulldogs in an exhibition game at 7:00 PM. Both squads will face-off before the Royals' home opener on Thursday night when the Princeton Rays come to town for a three game set at Burlington Athletic Stadium.
Burlington is looking to begin this new season on the right foot after finishing 31-37 in 2015. Royals' manager Scott Thorman returns for his second year at the helm looking to help guide the club back to the Appalachian League playoffs for the first time since 2012. Pitching coach Carlos Martinez will be back for his fifth season while hitting coach Jesus Azuaje returns for his second stint with the club as well.
Kernersville has been a member of the Carolina Virginia Collegiate League (CVCL) since 2007 and has captured five league titles. The CVCL is composed of 11 teams based in North Carolina and Virginia. Participating players are from the NCAA Division I, II and III levels along with various NAIA schools and junior colleges. In this year's MLB Draft, a record 13 former CVCL players were selected. Currently, Kernersville has 16 former players in MLB organizations.
Last year, the Royals blanked the Bulldogs 7-0. This will be the sixth season in a row the two teams will meet at Burlington Athletic Stadium. Entering play on Tuesday night, Kernersville sits atop the CVCL's Eastern Division at 13-4.
