Yankees Father/Son Duos

June 19, 2016

There have been several father/son pairs who have found their way to professional baseball. The Yankees have seen its fair share including two pairs that even made it up to the majors. We took a quick look at some of them in honor of Father's Day.

Yogi and Dale Berra: Yogi Berra made his major league debut on September 22, 1946 and became a mainstay of the New York Yankees for the next 18 years as well as playing four games with the New York Mets during the 1965 season. He set multiple World Series records, won 10 championships, and was a 15-time All-Star. Berra has accumulated multiple honors throughout his career as both a player and coach ending by being inducted into the National Baseball Hall Of Fame in 1972.

His son, Dale Berra, was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1975. He made his major league debut on August 22, 1977. While primarily a shortstop, he also played second and third base. He spent eight years with the Pirates before getting picked up by the Yankees where he spent two seasons playing for his father who managed the team. His last season was in 1987 with the Houston Astros.

Ron and Ike Davis: Ron Davis was originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs but was traded to the Yankees in 1978. He worked his way up to make his major league debut on July 29, 1978. He holds the Yankees' record for most consecutive strikeouts in a single game with eight. He pitched in the majors for 11 years with the New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the San Francisco Giants.

His son, Ike Davis was drafted by the Yankees' cross-town rivals the New York Mets in 2008. He made his major league debut with the Mets on April 19, 2010. In 2014, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Zach Thornton and Blake Taylor. After the 2014 season, he was traded to the Oakland A's where he pitched up to August when he had surgery to repair a torn hip labrum. The Texas Rangers picked him up in February 2016 to a minor league contract. He was released in June and was picked up by the New York Yankees where he is currently.

Mark and Dalton Blaser: Mark Blaser was drafted by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 1981 draft. In his first season in professional ball, Blaser actually played in the Appalachian splitting the season between the Gulf Coast League Yankees and their then-affiliate the Paintsville Yankees, based out of Paintsville, Kentucky. He spent the next four seasons working through the farm system getting as high as Double-A. His last season was in the Montreal Expos systems playing for the West Palm Beach Expos in 1986.

His son Dalton Blaser was just drafted by the New York Yankees in the eighth round out of Cal State Fullerton. He spent most of his playing time in the outfield for the Titans and according to his player page, batted .256 with 22 hits, six doubles, and seven RBIs. As of today, he hasn't been assigned to a team yet.
