Burlington Releases 2016 Opening Day Roster
Burlington, NC - The Burlington Royals have released their 2016 Opening Day roster as they prepare to open their season at home on Thursday night against the Princeton Rays. 16 players selected in the 2016 MLB Draft highlight this year's roster that will be guided by second year manager Scott Thorman. The 30-man roster is composed of 16 pitchers, three catchers, seven infielders, and four outfielders.
Pitchers
7th round pick Travis Eckert (Oregon State) and 9th round pick Walker Sheller (Stetson) are two of nine 2016 MLB Draftees who will be making their professional career debuts with the B-Royals. Joining them from this year's draft class will be Geoffrey Bramblett (Alabama), Justin Camp (Auburn), Anthony Kidston (Louisville), Alex Massey (Tulane), David McKay (Florida Atlantic), Michael Silva (Loyola Marymount) and Vance Tatum (Mississippi State).
Andre Davis represents the only B-Royal to return from the 2015 team. Last year, Davis went 3-1, hurling 27.2 innings. Other pitchers include Christian Castillo (2015 DSL Royals), Garrett Davila (2015 4th round pick), Ofreidy Gomez (2015 DSL Royals), Alex Close (2015 AZL Royals), Felix Familia (2015 AZL Royals) and Jose Veras (2015 AZL Royals). This year's pitching staff is made up of five left-handers, and 11 right-handers.
Catchers
28th round pick Yordany Salva will be making his professional debut in Burlington this summer after being drafted out of Broward College. Along with Salva, Michael Arroyo (2015 AZL Royals) and Nathan Esposito (2015 AZL Royals) will help direct the 16-man pitching staff.
Infielders
The B-Royals infield will be headlined by the highly touted 5th round selection, SS Nicky Lopez (Creighton). This season, Lopez batted .306 and received All-Big East second team honors. Along with Lopez, 8th round pick 1B Chris Devito (New Mexico) and Tyler Straub (UTSA) accompany Lopez from 2016 MLB Draft class. Gabriel Cancel (2015 7th round pick), Emmanuel Rivera (2015 AZL Royals), Jonathan McCray (2015 AZL Royals) and Logan Nottebrook (Idaho Falls) will join them.
Outfielders
Burlington's outfield is made up of three first year players. 11th round pick Vance Vizcaino (Stetson), 13th round selection Logan Gray (Austin Peay) and 23rd round pick Kort Peterson (UCLA) will make their first professional appearances in Burlington. Cristhian Vazquez (2015 AZL Royals) will also join the bunch.
The B-Royals begin their season on Tuesday night when the play an exhibition game against the Kernersville Bulldogs of the Carolina Virginia Collegiate League. Burlington opens their 2016 regular season at 7:00 PM when they open a three game set with the Princeton Rays at Burlington Athletic Stadium.
