Wood strikes out two in scoreless inning
Cubs right-hander pitches out of bullpen for Peoria
Kerry Wood's first relief appearance was a success on Sunday as the hard-throwing right-hander pitched a scoreless inning in the Peoria Chiefs' 5-3 victory over the Fort Wayne Wizards.
Before a crowd of 7,023 at Memorial Stadium, Wood entered to a standing ovation in the bottom of the fifth inning, retired Brett Dowdy on a grounder to third base and struck out Matt Thayer. Matt Lauderdale singled up the middle before Michael Baxter struck out.
Wood, who is rehabbing an injured pitching shoulder, threw 15 of 22 pitches for strikes. He is expected to pitch another inning for Peoria in Tuesday's home game against Kane County. If all goes well, he could be activated from the disabled list on Friday.
