Drake retires 22 straight Dash batters
Drake fanned eight and gave up two hits over eight scoreless innings as Class A Advanced Frederick held on to defeat Winston-Salem, 4-2.
A 43rd-rounder out of Navy by the Orioles in 2008, Drake found himself in early trouble, giving up a single to Jose Martinez with one out in the first inning. Former first-rounder Jared Mitchell doubled to right field off Drake, but Martinez was thrown out at home.
The right-hander was in control after that, fanning Ian Gac to end the frame and retiring the next 21 batters in his longest performance of the season.
Drake is back in the Carolina League after an unsuccessful stint with Double-A Bowie in which he gave up 11 runs over four innings in two starts for the BaySox. The 24-year-old has been sharp for the Keys, going 2-0 with a 1.02 ERA in three outings.
Drake spent the entire 2010 season with Frederick, posting a 6-6 record and recording a 4.36 ERA in 24 games. Home runs were a problem for the Massachusetts native, as he gave up 19 in 128 innings.
LJ Hoes provided the offense for the Keys with a homer and four RBIs. Tyler Townsend had three hits, including a pair of doubles, to raise his average to .341.
Martinez, who was 0-for-11 in his last three games, hit a two-run homer in the ninth and finished with two hits for the Dash.
