Brewers announce release of LHP Hobbs Johnson
BILOXI, MS. - The Milwaukee Brewers have announced the following roster move that affects the Shuckers' roster. LHP Hobbs Johnson has been released from his minor league contract.
Johnson, 25, was 1-0 with a 6.04 ERA (25.1ip, 17er) this season for the Shuckers in 16 relief appearances. The Rocky Mount, NC native had an 8-8 overall record as a Shucker over the past two seasons, with a 4.23 ERA (142.2ip, 67er) in 77 games (49 starts), striking out 113 and walking 97. The left-hander finished the 2015 season in the starting rotation and went 7-8 with a 3.84 ERA in 25 starts.
Johnson opened the 2015 season going 2-0 for Biloxi with a 1.65 ERA (16.1ip, 3er) in four starts in April. He posted a 4-4 record with a 3.61 ERA (62.1ip, 25er) in 13 starts in the first half. Johnson was selected as a mid-season Southern League All-Star. In 2014, at Class-A Brevard County, the former North Carolina Tar Heel was among the Florida State League leaders in opponent batting average (2nd, .221), wins (T3rd, 12), ERA (4th, 2.93) and innings pitched (4th, 147.2).
Johnson split his first pro season in 2013 between Rookie Helena and Class-A Wisconsin, posting a combined 0.86 ERA in 11 relief appearances (21ip, 32k). He graduated from Rocky Mount (NC) High School, where he was a two-time All-State selection and attended the University of North Carolina, where he helped the Tar Heels to the 2013 College World Series. Johnson was drafted by the Brewers in the 14th round in 2013.
The Shuckers' current roster is made up of 24 active players and three on the disabled list.
The Shuckers have today off, but will head to Regions Field in Birmingham, Ala. and take on the Barons for five, beginning on Wednesday. It has yet to be determined who will take the mound for Biloxi, while Birmingham will go with LHP Jordan Guerrero (4-3, 4.28) in the opener. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with coverage starting at 6:45 p.m. on the Biloxi Shuckers' Radio Network's flagship station WGCM 1240 AM, 100.9 FM, Pascagoula's WPMO 1580 AM and the TuneIn Radio app.
WHAT'S ON TAP: Shuckers baseball returns to MGM Park when the club hosts the Jacksonville Suns at MGM Park, Monday, July 4th through Friday, July 8th. Celebrate a family friendly Independence Day with Shuckers baseball on the 4th, followed by a special Independence Day Patriotic Themed Fireworks Extravaganza. The sky will light up Biloxi with over 4,000 shells being fired from center field.
