Redbirds Give Sellout Crowd July 4 Fireworks
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - Alberto Rosario's bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the 11th gave the Memphis Redbirds a 2-1 win over the Nashville Sounds (Triple-A Athletics) in front of a 4th of July sellout crowd of 9,459 at AutoZone Park.
Rosario and Breyvic Valera each had two hits for the Redbirds (40-43), and each had a crucial knock in the late innings. Valera singled in the ninth to tie the game at 1, and Rosario provided the game-winner to send the Redbirds home winners in the series opener.
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision, but both were outstanding Monday night. Alex Reyes struck out nine and gave up one run on three hits in 6.2 innings, and Nashville's (47-38) Chris Smith also struck out nine and pitched 7.0 shutout innings. The Redbirds trailed 1-0 when Reyes was lifted for Corey Littrell, who struck out three in 1.2 perfect innings.
The Redbirds trailed 1-0 after Nashville's run in the fifth all the way until two strikes and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, when Valera poked a single through the left side of the infield that scored David Washington from second to tie the game.
Memphis turned an inning-ending double play behind Juan Gonzalez in his second inning of work in the 10th, and the potential winning run in Rosario was cut down at the plate on a Randal Grichuk single in the bottom of the 10th to keep the score 1-1 after 10.
Dean Kiekhefer entered and worked a perfect 11th, and the Redbirds quickly loaded the bases in the home-half after a Carlos Peguero infield single, a walk to Dean Anna and an intentional pass to Valera.
Matt Williams reached on a fielder's choice groundout, and Rosario lifted a ball to deep right field for the game-winner.
Kiekhefer moved to 2-1 with the win. The Redbirds have not lost a series opener since June 4 at Iowa.
