Sgt. Slaughter Named HR Derby Captain

July 5, 2016

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- Sgt. Slaughter, a WWE Hall-of-Famer and iconic Military-inspired character, is the fifth of eight celebrity captains named for the 2016 Harris Teeter and Tide+ Triple-A Baseball Home Run Derby presented by Clariant. The event, which kicks off the three-day All-Star celebration at BB&T Ballpark, takes center stage in Uptown Charlotte on Monday, July 11th. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. on July 11th and "Sarge" will sign pre-event autographs down on the field along with the seven other celebrity captains.

In all, a total of eight sluggers -- including six Triple-A participants (three from the International League and three from the Pacific Coast League) and two High School Home Run Derby winners (Riley Zayicek of Lake Norman High and Trent Alley of Charlotte Country Day) -- will compete for the 2016 Triple-A Home Run Derby championship belt. Home Run Derby participants and additional celebrity captains will be announced later this week. Slaughter joins the already announced celebrity group of Jason Sehorn, Shaq Thompson, Mark Price, and Jack McDowell.

A professional wrestling legend, Slaughter won the WWF World Heavyweight Championship belt in 1991 by beating the Ultimate Warrior at the Royal Rumble. Over the course of his illustrious career -- which has spanned 40 years -- Sgt. Slaughter played a key role in the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero series, including its toyline, animated series, and comic books. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004. As a captain on Monday, July 11th, Slaughter will appear on behalf of the Crockett Foundation, who focus their efforts on helping veterans and veterans organizations.
