McKenry's Bomb Gives Memphis Series Win over Division Leader

McKenry Walks Off in Bottom of the 9th; Redbirds Have Won Five of Last Seven Series
July 7, 2016

MEMPHIS, Tennessee - Michael McKenry hit a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and the Memphis Redbirds won the series with the division-leading Nashville Sounds (Triple-A Athletics), 7-6, Wednesday night at AutoZone Park.

McKenry hit a 1-1 pitch into the Redbirds (41-44) bullpen for the win, which came after Memphis had two separate two-run leads earlier in the game. It was Memphis' second walk-off in three games against the Sounds (48-39), after Alberto Rosario had an RBI single in the 11th inning of the opener Monday night to send the crowd home happy with a 2-1 win.

McKenry also tripled in the game, which was his fourth of the season after having a total of four in his previous six seasons combined. Breyvic Valera was 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, and Dean Anna also had two hits for Memphis. Harrison Bader, who was called up from Double-A Springfield earlier in the day, was 1-for-5 with a double and a run in his Triple-A debut.

McKenry threw out the Pacific Coast League's leading base-stealer, Arismendy Alcantara, twice in the game. Alcantara had stolen 26 bases without being caught so far this season.

Mike Mayers pitched 6.0 innings and gave up a pair of runs on four hits. His ERA now stands at 2.49 after eight Triple-A starts.

In a back-and-forth contest, the Sounds led 2-0 after the top of the third before Memphis tied it in the bottom of the fourth with two runs of its own. That started a string of four-straight scoring innings for the Redbirds, who led 4-2 heading into the seventh.

Nashville tied it up in the top of the seventh before Memphis re-claimed a 6-4 lead in the home-half, and the Sounds once again had an answer with a two-run pinch-hit home run by Max Muncy in the top of the ninth.

That set up the dramatics for McKenry and the Redbirds in the bottom of the ninth to secure a series win in a short three-game set with the division-leading Sounds.
