Wings out-last Bats in 18 innings

Chang hit wins longest game at Frontier
May 9, 2011
The Red Wings beat the Louisville Bats 7-6, in the longest game in Frontier Field history Monday night..and Tuesday morning. The series continues with a 7:05 p.m. game Tuesday night.

Ray Chang knocked in the final run in the bottom of the 18th, after three consecutive two-out singles. Dustin Martin scored the winning run.

15 innings was the longest previous game played at Frontier, actually happening twice against Pawtucket in 1997 and 2002.

The Bats jumped on Rochester starter Andy Baldwin in the first inning, using back-to-back-to-back doubles to open the game and take a 2-0 lead. Juan Francisco, who just joined Louisville Monday on a rehab assignment from the Reds, the third double. After a strike out, Jeremy Hermida, who entered the game hitting .429 against right-handed pitching, hit the fourth double of the inning, giving the Bats an early 3-0 lead. The inning ended on the eighth batter of the inning, with a 4-0 Bats' lead.

The Wings gained back two runs in the bottom of the second off Louisville starter Dontrelle Willis. Matt Brown started the inning off with a ground-rule double. Steve Singleton followed with a quick single, putting Brown on third. Chase Lambin then worked a walk to load the bases, and Martin knocked the first run in on a single. But the inning took a turn for the worse when Toby Gardenhire hit into a double play. Singleton scored on the play, but the Wings still missed a good opportunity to add on some runs.

The Red Wings had another great opportunity with the bases loaded and no one out in the bottom of the sixth. Steve Holm led off the inning with a single, and was quickly followed by a walk and single by Jeff Bailey and Brown, respectively. But back-to-back strikeouts of Singleton and Lambin made it look like Willis was going to get out of the inning, although a passed ball with Lambin at bat did score a run. But Martin came through with an RBI single, which led to an error by Bats' second baseman Kristopher Negron that scored the third run of the inning, and ended Willis's night. The inning ended with the Wings leading 5-4.

After the first inning, Baldwin settled down and did not allow another run. He pitched five and a third innings and gave up nine hits, with four strikeouts and no walks. Kyle Waldrop came in to relieve Baldwin and pitched into the eighth, when two singles put runners at first and third with one out. Phil Dumatriat replaced Waldrop and yielded a double to Yonder Alonso that allowed Louisville to re-take the lead, 6-5.

But the Wings bounced back once again to tie the game. In the bottom of the eighth, Brown hit a solo home run off Bats' reliever Carlos Fisher, making the game 6-6.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Wings had the chance to win the game in walk-off fashion, with Martin on second and an intentional walk of Brian Dinkelman with one out. But a strikeout and pop-up took the game into extra innings.

Neither bullpen relented over the next eight innings, and the game went to the 18th inning without any change. The Wings had a chance in the bottom of the 12th, when Dinkelman started the inning with a single. A sacrifice bunt and ground out got him to third, but he did not score.

Carlos Gutierrez worked the 13th, 14th and 15th innings. He worked out of a bases loaded situation in the 15th.

The game finally ended in the bottom of the 18th. With two outs, Martin hit a bloop single. Gardenhire and Dinkelman followed with consecutive infield singles. Then Chang ended the game with the fourth consecutive two-out single.

The game ended in five hours and five minutes, with 17 hits for each team. Chuck James, who came in in the top of the 18th, got the win, while Daniel Ray Herrera got the loss for Louisville.

NOTES: Dontrelle Willis had previously faced Rochester on May 2, 2008 when the Red Wings defeated Toledo 6-4 at Fifth Third Field. Willis took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four in 4.2 innings of work. Former Red Wing Darnell McDonald had a big night for Rochester that night, going 3-for-4 with a home run (off Jeremy Johnson) and five RBI.

This Day in Red Wings History: 1973 - the Red Wings scored four runs in the top of the ninth to get a come back victory against the Chiefs in Syracuse. Larry Johnson led the team with three rbis. The victory put Rochester into first place in International League standings...1972- Behind the strong starting pitching of Wayne Garland, the Rochester Red Wings shutout the Toledo Mud Hens 2-0. Garland was fantastic on the hill, allowing only four hits, while striking out eight, all part of his complete-game effort. In addition to his stellar pitching, Garland also helped his own cause by stroking a double. Offensively, Tom Matchick went 2-for-3 and scored a run, Jerry DaVanon drove in the first Wings run, and Rich Coggins drove in the second, providing Garland with all the run support he would need. The win moved Rochester to three games over .500, and helped them move within 2 games of first-place Richmond... 1991- Despite the best efforts of SP Curt Schilling, the Red Wings dropped a tight game to Tidewater 4-3. Schilling was spectacular, allowing only two runs on four hits over seven innings, striking out five while walking only two, but the Wings didn’t provide the run support. Rochester actually held a 3-0 lead through six innings, thanks to an offensive outburst in the fourth. Rochester got all three of their hits in the game in the fourth, and put two runs on the board. Chris Hoiles and Leo Gomez singled, and with Hoiles at third, Tony Chance singled to give the Wings a 1-0 lead. The very next Wing up, Chris Padget grounded out, scoring Gomez, and putting Rochester up 2-0. But Rochester went hitless the rest of the game, and the Tide rallied for the win. Reliever Mike Jones (2-3) took the loss, surrendering the game-winning, two-run pinch-hit HR in the top of the 9th...2005 - Chris Heintz had two hits with a homer and three RBI for the Wings, who had their three-game winning streak snapped in the first of an eight-game homestand. The two teams combined for 29 hits off of 9 pitchers...1933 - Before leaving for Canada to face Montreal and Toronto, the Red Wings defeated the Skeeters of Jersey City 4-3, for three consecutives victories. The Wings won 6 out of 14 games on this homestand, putting them in fourth place with sixteen wins and thirteen losses...2006 - J.D. Durbin struck out six in 6 2/3 innings, and Pat Neshek finished off the combined effort shutout as the Red Wings beat the Buffalo Bisons 3-0 Tuesday night at Frontier Field.

This Day in IL Baseball History: 1985 – The Richmond Braves use a blend of powerful hitting and superb pitching to get by Pawtucket 7-1. The Braves’ offensive attack is sparked by Miguel Sosa, who clubs three solo home runs to establish a franchise record. Richmond’s Matt West keeps the Red Sox at bay throughout the game, striking out ten Pawtucket batters. West does not allow a hit until Mike Greenwell singles with two outs in the 6th inning. Gene Roof, Randy Johnson, and Larry Owen each add two hits for Richmond. Altogether the Braves rough up PawSox pitchers Robin Fuson and Tony Herron for 13 hits.

It Happened This Day: 1984 - The longest game in A.L. history (both in time and frames) ends in the 25th inning when Harold Baines homers off Chuck Porter to give the White Sox a 7-6 victory over the Brewers. The game falls one inning shy of the major league record, but takes the most time to play: eight hours and six minutes. The contest was suspended the previous day after 17 innings with the score tied 3-3 each team scores three more runs in the 21st. Tom Seaver pitches the final inning to earn the win, then wins the regularly scheduled game as well 5-4... 1987 - Eddie Murray homers from each side of the plate for the second consecutive game, a major league first. Murray's four home runs in two days help the Orioles to 7-6 and 15-6 wins over the White Sox... 1988 - Oakland beats Detroit 3-1 to extend its club-record winning streak to 14 consecutive games, the longest in the majors since 1977. The A's will finally lose tomorrow 8-2 to the Tigers... 1989 - Mets shortstop Kevin Elster and Red Sox catcher Rick Cerone end their major league-record errorless game streaks at their positions. Elster had played 88 consecutive games without an error while Cerone had played 159.
