Top Catching Prospect, Torrens, Bolsters RiverDogs Roster Looking for Second Half Spark
CHARLESTON, SC - After a so-so start to the second half of the season, the Charleston RiverDogs hope that reinforcements from the lower levels will help them rediscover the first half magic that saw the club capture their first playoff berth in over decade. After a hot start in the New York Penn League, the New York Yankees' top catching prospect, Luis Torrens, has been called up to Class A Charleston. In a corresponding move, catcher Eduardo Navas was reassigned to Short Season Staten Island.
Rated the 11th best prospect in the Yankees system according to MLB.com, Torrens, 20, made a strong impression in Short Season Staten Island in his return from shoulder surgery. An accomplished catcher on both sides of the plate, the Valencia, Venezuela native hit .311 (14-45) with four doubles and five RBIs in 12 games with the Baby Bombers after being sidelined for the entirety of the 2015 season.
The 6'0", 175 pound backstop had a brief stint with the RiverDogs in 2014, and went just 4-for-26 (.154) with one home run at the plate to open the year. After a five game rehab assignment in the Gulf Coast League, Torrens finished the season with Staten Island strongly, posting a .270/.327/.405 line with two homers and 18 RBIs in 48 games while being named a NYPL Mid-Season All-Star. The right handed bat reached base safely in 28 consecutive games from June 28 to August 4 and hit safely in 21 straight from June 28 to July 26 with Staten Island. Behind the plate, he threw out 31 of 80 (38.75%) would-be base stealers on the year.
Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2013, the Venezuelan catcher began his career in the Gulf Coast League in 2013 where he hit .241/.348/.299 with one home run and 14 RBIs in 48 games to start his career.
Torrens joins the RiverDogs (49-37, 7-10) as they begin a weeklong homestand at The Joe with a three game series against the Rome Braves from July 12-14 and four game tilt with the Lakewood BlueClaws, the Class A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, from July 15-18.
