Strong Start from Phillips Not Enough for Indians
SPOKANE, WA - Tyler Phillips (1-3) turned in his best start in nearly a month but it wasn't enough for the Indians as Spokane's bullpen melted down against the Volcanoes in a 14-2 loss Tuesday night at Avista Stadium. The 18-year-old righty struck out seven over five innings while allowing just earned two runs in front of 3,526 fans for Rhythm & Brews Night presented by No-Li Brewhouse and KISS 98.1.
Salem-Keizer scored once in the third and twice in the fourth against Phillips before blowing the game open with six runs in the sixth inning against relievers Christian Torres and Kevin Lenik. The Volcanoes added one more run in the seventh and four in the ninth to round out their scoring. Spokane catcher Carlos Garay made an appearance on the mound in the ninth, striking out Ryan Kirby for the final out of the inning.
The Indians offense was nowhere to be found against Salem-Keizer as Spokane didn't pick up their first hit of the game until the ninth inning. Travis Bolin drove in Spokane's only two runs with a double and Clay Middleton reached base four times on three walks and a hit-by-pitch. Second baseman Blaine Prescott finished 0-for-4 to snap his 12-game hitting streak.
