Skaggs Ties Strikeout Record in Bees Win

Tyler Skaggs authored a record tying fourteen strikeout performance, as he led the Salt Lake Bees to a 2-0 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers on Thursday night. In seven innings of work, Skaggs equaled a franchise best and set a career high in strikeouts. The team record was set by Jered Weaver, when he fanned 14 Sacramento batters on June 23, 2006. Skaggs (2-2) gave up a two out single in the first inning and then retired the last nineteen batters he faced. Mike Morin worked a scoreless eighth and Jose Valdez issued a walk, but gave up no runs to earn his second save and close out the Salt Lake pitching staff's second shutout of the season. Morin and Valdez each fanned one Omaha batter, so the total of sixteen strikeouts, also tied a team record for a nine inning game set on June 12, 2007 against Colorado Springs.

The Storm Chasers were limited to two hits by Salt Lake pitching; a two out single in the first by Reymond Fuentes and a two out single by Irving Falu in the eighth. The Bees scored both of their runs in the sixth inning on a leadoff homer by Carlos Perez, his first since joining Salt Lake from the Angels and a two out solo shot by Rafael Ortega, his second of the season. Salt Lake managed just six hits with Perez leading the way with two.
