Guzman, Burg combine to plate five runs in win
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (July 15, 2016) - Ronald Guzman and Alex Burg both had multi-RBI games as the Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, defeated the Corpus Christi Hooks 6-1 in the third game of the series Thursday night at Whataburger Field.
Guzman finished the game 3-for-4, just a triple away from the cycle. He drove in a pair of runs on a second-inning solo homer and a fifth-inning double. Burg led the Riders (46-44 overall, 8-13 second half) with three runs batted in, including a two-run single to cap the scoring in a four-run sixth inning.
For the third straight day, a Riders starter pitched six-or-more innings and turned in a quality start. Victor Payano (6-6) tossed six consecutive scoreless frames before giving up a solo home run to Roberto Pena in the seventh. Despite allowing nine hits, Payano struck out six and did not walk a batter in 6 2/3 innings of work.
Ryan Ledbetter and Ryne Slack combined to keep the Hooks (58-33, 11-10) off the board after Payano departed. Ledbetter retired all four batters he faced, including J.D. Davis with two on and two out in the seventh. Corpus Christi went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base.
The Riders have hit a home run in each of the last seven games, one shy of a season-high.
The Riders wrap up their four-game road series against Corpus Christi Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Frisco has yet to announce its starter, while Corpus Christi sends righty Edison Frias (3-1, 2.67 ERA) to the mound.
