Brandon Woodruff named Southern League Pitcher of the Week
BILOXI, MS. - Biloxi Shuckers right-hander Brandon Woodruff has been named the Southern League's Pitcher of the Week. Woodruff made one start over the past week, last Wednesday, July 13, tossing seven shutout innings and matching a career-high with 10 strikeouts in the 1-0 win over the Blue Wahoos.
The Wheeler, Miss. native is 4-6 with a 4.04 ERA in 11 starts for the Shuckers this season and overall is 8-7 with a 3.06 ERA in 19 starts between Advanced-A Brevard County and Biloxi. Woodruff ranks first in the Brewers' organization in strikeouts (108), is tied for first in wins and ranks fifth in ERA.
The product of Mississippi State was promoted to Biloxi, from Brevard County on May 15 and was named a Florida State League mid-season All-Star. In eight starts for the 'Manatees, Woodruff posted a 4-1 record and 1.83 ERA with 49 strikeouts and just 10 walks.
In 54 career minor league games, 46 starts, the 23-year-old has a 13-16 career record and 3.27 ERA with 216 strikeouts in 256.1 innings pitched.
Woodruff was selected by the Brewers in the 11th round of the 2014 draft out of Mississippi State. This is Woodruff's first Player of the Week honor in his pro career. Woodruff is also the first Biloxi pitcher to be given the award in 2016 and first since Adrian Houser won the award last August 24-30. He becomes the fourth overall to win the award for the franchise, joining Houser, Brent Suter and tonight's starter, Brooks Hall.
The Shuckers and Birmingham Barons wrap up a five-game series with the rubber match on Monday night at MGM Park. RHP Brooks Hall (3-1, 3.83) will take the mound for Biloxi, but RHP James Dykstra (3-4, 5.40) will take the mound for Birmingham. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., with coverage starting at 6:50 p.m. on the Biloxi Shuckers' Radio Network's flagship station WGCM 1240 AM, 100.9 FM, Pascagoula's WPMO 1580 AM and the TuneIn Radio app.
