Goldschmidt's Slam Highlight Big BayBears Night

May 14, 2011
MOBILE, Ala. - Left-hander Patrick Corbin struck out a career-high 10 batters while Paul Goldschmidt and Ryan Wheeler did all the work on offense in the BayBears' 8-0 clobbering of the Carolina Mudcats in front of 5,947 fans on Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Corbin (2-1) began mowing through the Mudcats (10-26) early in the contest as he struck out the side in the first and third innings. He gave up a single in every inning that he pitched as he lasted six but didn't allow any runs while only walking one.

Matt Klinker (1-2) also pitched well for Carolina as he kept the BayBears (20-14) off the board until the bottom of the fifth. Dan Kaczrowski started the frame with a single and took second on a sac bunt from Corbin. After A.J. Pollock fanned, Ollie Linton reached on a fielder error by first baseman Jake Kahaulelio to prolong the inning.

Goldschmidt helped the BayBears take advantage of the extra out with an RBI single to score Kaczrowski. Wheeler shot a base hit to right, scoring Linton to put the BayBears up 2-0.

Goldschmidt and Wheeler continued their show in the seventh against reliever Donnie Joseph. Jake Elmore singled to start the frame and was followed by a Pollock bunt hit. Linton walked to load the bags. Goldschmidt cracked a towering fly down the right field line that snuck over the fence for his second grand slam of the season.

The next batter, Wheeler, drilled his third homer to put the BayBears up by seven. He finished the scoring in the eighth with a sac fly to bring Elmore home. Bryan Woodall (S, 2) collected three scoreless innings out of the bullpen while allowing just one hit.

The BayBears battle the Mudcats in game two of their five-game set on Sunday afternoon at 2:05. Right-hander Jarrod Parker (3-2) starts for the BayBears against fellow righty Daryl Thompson (0-3). It's a Family Day at "The Hank" as kids will be able to play catch on the field before the game and run the bases after. For tickets, please call (251) 479-BEAR or log on towww.mobilebaybears.com.
