Bees get doubleheader sweep over Kernels in Burlington

Kernels held to seven hits on the day

Burlington, IA - The Burlington Bees swept a doubleheader over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Sunday at Community Field. The Kernels were held to one run and seven hits over the two games, losing 2-1 and 2-0.

In game one Burlington won 2-1. The Bees scored their two runs in the 3rd inning off of Kernels starter Heath Nichols. Burlington's Tyreace House led off the inning with a single. John Nester then doubled to bring home House and give the Bees a 1-0 lead. Nester later scored on a RBI groundout by Nino Leyja, making the score 2-0.

The Kernels cut the lead in half with a single run in the 4th inning. Travis Witherspoon led off the inning with a double. He scored later in the inning on a double play groundout by Ricky Alvarez, cutting Burlington's lead to 2-1.

Blake Hassebrock (3-0) went 5.2 innings in the win for the Bees. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out three and walking two.

Zach Thornton picked up his first save in 1.1 innings of work for the Bees. He allowed no runs and no hits.

Nichols (1-3) took the loss for the Kernels. He pitched six innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five and walking two.

In game two, the Bees won 2-0. Burlington starter A.J. Griffin took a no-hitter into the 6th inning before allowed three hits in the inning.

Griffin (4-0) went 5.2 innings and allowed no runs on three hits while striking out four and walking one.

Burlington scored single runs in the 2nd and 5th innings. In the 2nd inning, Douglas Landaeta singled with two outs against Kernels starter Suammy Baez. Landaeta later came home on a RBI single by Tyreace House to give the Bees a 1-0 lead. Nino Leyja led off the 5th inning with a single and later scored on a RBI groundout by Yordy Cabrera, extending Burlington's lead to 2-0.

Baez (1-3) went 4.1 innings for the Kernels. He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three and walking one. A.J. Schugel pitched 1.2 innings in relief. He allowed no runs on two hits while striking out none and walking one.

Burlington's Chris Mederos recorded his fifth save in 1.1 innings of work. He allowed no runs and no hits while striking out one.

The Kernels have dropped seven games in a row.

The Kernels return to action on Tuesday at Perfect Game Field against the Kane County Cougars at 6:35 p.m.
