Chasers Have One Slip Away in Nashville, 6-5
NASHVILLE - A critical error caused Omaha to lose an 8th inning lead and a 6-5 decision to Nashville on Sunday evening at First Tennessee Park.
Omaha took a 1st inning lead for a 2nd consecutive night; with 2 out, Rey Fuentes singled, and Hunter Dozier doubled down the left field line. Sounds left fielder Colin Walsh misplayed it, allowing Fuentes to score, and Jorge Bonifacio followed with an RBI single to score Dozier for a 2-0 lead.
The Sounds pulled a run back in their half of the 1st; Billy Burns singled, went to 2nd on a balk, advanced to 3rd on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Renato Nunez.
Christian Binford and Sounds starter Dillon Overton were tough to hit in the following innings. The Chasers maintained their 2-1 lead until the bottom of the 6th, when Nashville tied the game on a double by Matt Olson, a single by Renato Nunez, and a 3-6-3 double play hit into by Colin Walsh. It was 2-2.
Binford was lifted after 6 effective innings. He allowed 2 runs, 6 hits, and 3 walks, while striking out 3.
Miguel Almonte relieved Binford in the 7th, but was knocked for a pair of go-ahead runs. Bryan Anderson began the rally with a 1-out single, and Billy Burns singled him to 3rd. Jaycob Brugman doubled both runners home, giving Nashville a 4-2 lead.
But the Chasers rallied to re-gain the lead in the top of the 8th. Dillon Overton ran out of steam after 7+ innings, yielding a single to Orlando Calixte that Colin Walsh again misplayed, allowing Calixte to scamper all the way to 3rd. Raul Mondesi followed with an RBI single, and Rey Fuentes also singled. That was all for Overton, who would be charged with 5 runs and 9 hits, with 8 strikeouts and no walks.
With Tucker Healy (W, 4-1) on the mound, Mondesi and Fuentes pulled off a double-steal, and Mondesi subsequently scored on a wild pitch, tying the game. Jorge Bonifacio then drove home Fuentes with a sac fly, making it 5-4 Omaha.
A defensive misplay handed Nashville the lead back in the bottom of the 8th. With runners at 1st and 2nd and 2 out, Bryan Anderson hit a weak ground ball to 2nd for an apparent final out of the inning. But Orlando Calixte fumbled it, and the bases were loaded instead. Billy Burns then singled home 2 runs, giving Nashville a 6-5 advantage, which would prove decisive.
Malcolm Culver (L, 4-4) was victimized for 2 unearned runs, making him the losing pitcher.
Patrick Schuster pitched the 9th for Nashville, earning his 6th save.
The Chasers will continue the series in Nashville tomorrow night. RHP Alec Mills (3-1, 3.71) will start for Omaha, while Nashville will counter with RHP Ross Detwiler (1-0, 1.80). First pitch will be at 7:05.
