Missions Muster Rain-Shortened Triumph
SAN ANTONIO - Nick Schulz's three-run home run paced San Antonio's three dinger attack Monday night as the Missions overpowered Corpus Christi 10-4 at Wolff Stadium.
With the home club scheduled to bat in the eighth, an approaching storm dumped heavy rain on the ballpark. Following a 30-minute delay, the game was called.
The Hooks managed to strike first Monday night. Derek Fisher belted his 15th home run of the year, a no-doubter off the scoreboard in right field.
San Antonio (16-15, 38-63) starter Kyle Lloyd settled in, retiring the next 10 hitters.
Franchy Cordero opened the Missions first with a base hit to right field. Cy Sneed plunked the next batter, prompting a Jose Rondon sac bunt. Schulz then rolled a grounder to short to level the game at 1.
Nick Torres ignited the San Antonio second with a home run. The first two Missions reached in the third and, following another Rondon bunt, Schulz sent a three-run bomb over the right-field fence.
River Stevens' lead-off shot in the fourth paved the way toward a two-run frame.
Sneed (4-4) entered Monday having allowed only five home runs in 17 appearances this season.
Corpus Christi (14-17, 61-40) began to chip away in the fifth. Danry Vasquez opened with a double and, two outs later, Ramon Laureano launched a triple off the wall in center for the Hooks' second run.
J.D. Davis hit a lead-off double in the seventh and promptly came home via a Vasquez round-tripper.
Vasquez has gone deep twice in his last three games.
Of the six hits charged to Lloyd (5-4), five went for extra bases.
San Antonio salted the game with three runs in the seventh against Michael Freeman.
Lefty Albert Minnis was the only Hooks pitcher to emerge unmarked, working two scoreless innings.
The series resumes Tuesday night. Trent Thornton (7-4, 4.12 at Lancaster) is slated to make his Double-A debut for Corpus Christi. Missions send Seth Simmons (1-2, 2.35) to the mound. First pitch 7:05.
