Ninth Inning Comeback Bid Falls Short
The Tri-City Dust Devils (0-2, 19-21) scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning, but could not erase Spokane's lead as the Indians (2-0, 21-19) won 7-5 on Wednesday night. The Dust Devils struggled early with leaving runners stranded, putting the team in a hole they ultimately could not overcome.
Tri-City had two runners reach base in each of the first five innings of the game, but could not bring home a run. While the team was struggle to plate runs, Spokane was busy again doing damage with the long ball. The Indians had three home runs on Tuesday and hit two additional blasts off of the Dust Devils' pitching staff on Wednesday.
Buddy Reed provided a spark at the plate for Tri-City. Reed finished a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Luis Asuncion also had a strong night for the team. Asuncion had two hits, walked twice, and scored a run.
The Dust Devils will look to avoid the sweep in the final game of the three-game road series on Thursday night. Tri-City will send left-hander Joey Lucchesi to the mound. Spokane will counter with southpaw Sal Mendez. The team will return home August 4th, which will be License Plate Frame Giveaway Night presented by Lourdes Health, to begin an eight-game homestand. Great seats are available by calling the Dust Devils' front office at (509) 544-8789 or by going to www.dustdevilsbaseball.com to purchase tickets.
