MiLB promo preview: 10 to know

What's going on this week in the Minors?
August 2, 2005
Minor League Baseball teams are known for their game promotions. Every Tuesday, we preview 10 of the best for the upcoming week.

If you would like an upcoming promotion to be considered for this feature in the future, please send it to "[email protected]" with the subject line: promo preview.

Brooklyn Cyclones
African American Night
Saturday, Aug. 6 vs. Vermont
The Cyclones plan to give away Life of Jackie Robinson DVDs to the first 2,500 fans at Keyspan Park in Coney Island. The giveaway honors a national hero and the man who broke baseball's color barrier, as well as pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Brooklyn's 1955 World Series championship season.

West Virginia Power
Mothman Night
Friday, Aug. 5 vs. Asheville
The Mothman is a local myth that has baffled observers for the past four decades. This strange creature reportedly resides in Point Pleasant, W.V., where on Nov. 22, 1966 a young couple spotted two large eyes attached to something that was "shaped like a man, but bigger, maybe 6 or 7 feet tall...[with] big wings folded against its back." To honor the myth (or is a legend?), the first 200 fans at the ballpark will take home a Mothman hat, and following the game fans can watch The Mothman Prophecies on the video screen. You never know, you may even catch a glimpse of Mothman at Appalachian Power Park.

Colorado Springs Sky Sox
Girls Night Out
Thursday, Aug. 4 vs. Nashville
Hey ladies, check this out: 20-cent hot wings, drink specials and free massages. It's all happening at Security Service Field during tonight's Sky Sox game. One lucky lady will even take home a diamond.

Lexington Legends
Be our 2,000,000th Fan
Thursday, Aug. 4 vs. Kannapolis
The Legends are set to celebrate a major milestone in their five-year history. During this game, one fan will walk into history and become the 2,000,000th person through the turnstiles. The club will present this fan with a prize package that includes a pass for 2 million Legends games. That means the winner can attend games for the next 28,571 years.

Charleston RiverDogs
Fairway to Heaven
Thursday, Aug. 4 vs. Greenville
Golf pros from several of the Lowcountry's top courses will compete in Charleston's annual "Fairway to Heaven" competition with the goal of chipping an iron shot from home plate into the centerfield batter's eye (approximately 134 yards). The competition begins at 6 p.m., and is held prior to the RiverDogs' home game against the Greenville Bombers with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The winning team receives "The Ugly Green Seat Award," which is literally a green box seat that resides in the winner's pro shop for a year.

Ottawa Lynx
Twenty-Five Cent Hot Dog Day
Thursday, Aug. 4 vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
Here's one you're unlikely to find in a Major League ballpark. For the price of one Dodger dog at Dodger Stadium, you can chow down 16 hot dogs at Lynx Stadium while watching Walter Young and Lynx take on the Shane Victorino and the Red Barons. Need we say more?

Montgomery Biscuits
Alabama/Auburn Night
Saturday, Aug. 6 vs. Birmingham
The Biscuits pay homage to the state's - and perhaps the nation's - biggest college football rivalry with a special Alabama/Auburn night. Show your allegiance to the Crimson Tide or the Tigers by wearing your colors to the game. There will be special VIP performances and "themed" in-game promos highlighting the in-state rivalry. The Boys in Biscuit and Blue promise to rally the crowd to find out who has the ultimate school spirit.

Oklahoma RedHawks
Go Pink Night
Saturday, Aug. 6 vs. Portland
The wives of the RedHawks players are sponsoring this promotion, which raises funds for the Project Woman Coalition, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping low-income, uninsured Oklahoma women gain better access to breast cancer screening. RedHawks Go Pink shirts will be on sale, and there will be a silent auction of baseball memorabilia as well. Fans are encouraged to wear their Go Pink shirts to the game and bid on a menagerie of items for this worthy cause.

Everett AquaSox
Baseball Cap Giveaway & Hawaiian Day
Sunday, Aug. 7 vs. Eugene
There are few cooler caps in the Minor Leagues than those of the Everett AquaSox of the Class A Northwest League. For the love of the game, their cap has a baseball-playin' frog on it. What's not to love? Be one of the first 1,000 fans at the park and take home your own AquaSox cap. Or just wear your favorite beach attire to the game and celebrate the spirit of the islands.

Wilmington Blue Rocks
Rocky Bullwinkle Giveaway
Tuesday, Aug. 9 vs. Winston-Salem
Not only will the first 2,500 fans take home a cool Rocky Bullwinkle Bobblehead doll, but it's also Terrific Tuesday at the park. That means you get two box seats, two small sodas, two dogs, two baseballs and two scorebooks for only $22. That's another reason why we love the Minors.

A few more promotions worth mentioning: Salem Avalanche, Taste of the Valley, Tuesday, Aug. 9 vs. Lynchburg ; High Desert Mavericks, Family Feast, Friday, Aug. 5 vs. Lancaster; New Britain Rock Cats, The Famous Dancing Christopher, Saturday, Aug. 6 vs. Trenton; West Michigan Whitecaps, Blues Brothers, Tuesday, Aug. 9 vs. Beloit; and Williamsport Crosscutters, Major League Baseball Card Giveaway, Monday, Aug. 8 vs. Auburn.
