Matt Duffy joins River Cats for rehab assignment

Giants third baseman makes Triple-A debut two years after Big League debut
July 30, 2016

West Sacramento, CA - San Francisco Giants' third baseman Matt Duffy will join the River Cats tonight in Sacramento as he begins a rehab assignment for an Achilles strain. He is expected to play tonight as Sacramento opens a four-game homestand against the Salt Lake Bees (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim).

Duffy was placed on the disabled list by the San Francisco Giants on June 21, retroactive to the 19th, after an MRI revealed that the right-handed hitter had strained his Achilles. Duffy has dealt with Achilles soreness on and off through his career but this is the first time the issue has landed him on the DL.

Tonight's game with the River Cats will be Duffy's first at the Triple-A level. With the Giants on an East Coast road trip late in the 2014 season, Duffy was promoted straight from Double-A Richmond and has stuck with the big club ever since. His Major League debut came on August 1, 2014, almost two years ago to the day.

In two-plus seasons with San Francisco, Duffy has hit .281 with 16 home runs and 102 RBI. In 2015, his first full season in the Majors, Duffy hit .295 with 12 home runs and 77 RBI and finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting, coming in just behind Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant.

Duffy joins Ehire Adrianza and Cory Gearrin, who are both already rehabbing with the River Cats. For the season, Duffy is the 10th member of San Francisco's Opening Day roster to rehab with Sacramento.

First pitch for tonight's game at Raley Field against the Salt Lake Bees is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates at 5 p.m. Tickets are still available for tonight and the rest of the series. For more information, please call 916.371.HITS (4487) or visit rivercats.com.
