Last chance to see Matt Carpenter on Wednesday, August 3

July 30, 2016

Springfield, MO - The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that Cardinals All-Star INF Matt Carpenter is scheduled to begin a Rehab Assignment with the Springfield Cardinals at Hammons Field on Sunday, July 31. Carpenter is expected to continue his Rehab Assignment with Springfield through Wednesday, August 3.

Carpenter, 30, has been one of the best players in baseball since debuting with St. Louis on June 4, 2011. The three-time National League All-Star, 2013 NL Silver Slugger and two-time NL Player of the Week entered the season with more doubles (132), runs (326) and multi-hit games (161) than any other National League player from 2013-15. After leading the team last year with 28 home runs, 84 RBIs, 44 doubles and 101 runs, Carpenter was hitting .298 with 14 homers, 25 doubles, 53 RBIs and 56 runs through 78 games prior to his injury this season.

The Fort Worth, Texas native can be found throughout the St. Louis Cardinals record books, including breaking Stan Musial's record for most doubles by a left-handed batter in a single season when he hit 55 two-base hits in 2013 (Musial's record was 53). Carpenter's 55 doubles were also a record for a Cardinals second baseman and were part of his Busch Stadium III record 112 hits at home that year. He became the first player in team history to hit a home run in three consecutive games of a single postseason series in the 2014 NL Division Series (Games 1, 2 and 3 vs. Los Angeles Dodgers), and then went on to match Lou Brock and Ray Lankford's single-season record with five leadoff home runs in 2015.

A former Springfield Cardinal, Carpenter hit .316 with 12 home runs, 26 doubles and 53 RBIs in 105 Double-A games in 2010. He was originally selected by St. Louis in the 13th round of the 2009 June Draft out of Texas Christian University.
