Boston bringing Benintendi to 'The Show'
Like Michael Conforto of the Mets a season ago, Andrew Benintendi will be making the jump from Double-A directly to the big leagues.
The Red Sox have called up baseball's No. 7 overall prospect to make his Major League debut Tuesday against the Mariners in Seattle, according to MLB.com.
A hot start at Class A Advanced put Benintendi on the fast track. The seventh overall pick in the 2015 Draft slashed .341/.413/.563 in 34 games with Salem in the Carolina League before getting the call to Portland on May 16.
"I wasn't nervous," Benintendi told MiLB.com on Opening Day about finding out Salem would be his first destination. "Going through Spring Training with all these guys and getting to know them a little better...I think our chemistry is really growing and we all feel pretty comfortable with each other."
The outfielder never slowed down after reaching the Eastern League, where he hit .295 with eight homers -- including two Sunday afternoon -- and 44 RBIs in 63 games.
The 22-year-old outfielder has received raves from scouts about his impressive mix of tools, including his strong defense in center. Benintendi didn't commit an error for the Sea Dogs. He has one in 87 games in the outfield this year.
The promotion came just over a year after Benintendi was given the Golden Spikes Award as the nation's top collegiate player as a sophomore at the University of Arkansas. Since a brief struggle in his professional debut with Class A Short Season Lowell, he's compiled a .312 average, 20 homers, 107 RBIs and 26 stolen bases in 151 Minor League games.
The Cincinnati native joins Jackie Bradley Jr., Mookie Betts and Brock Holt in Boston's outfield.
