Red Sox Call-Up Sea Dogs' Outfielder Benintendi
Portland, Maine - The Boston Red Sox announced today that Sea Dogs' outfielder Andrew Benintendi has been promoted to the Major Leagues to join the Red Sox.
Benintendi, 22, was assigned to Portland from High-A Salem on May 16th. In 63 games with the Sea Dogs, Benintendi hit .295/.357/.515 with 8 home runs, 44 RBI, 18 doubles, 5 triples, 40 runs, 8 stolen bases, and 24 walks.
In 97 games combined between Portland and Salem this season, Benintendi is hitting .312/.378/.532 with 9 home runs, 76 RBI, 31 doubles, 12 triples, 70 runs, 16 stolen bases, and 39 walks compared to 39 strikeouts. Benintendi leads all Red Sox minor leaguers in RBI and has the second-highest batting average among full-season minor leaguers.
Benintendi was named to the All-Star Futures Game this season and also earned Eastern League Player of the Week honors for the week of July 25-31.
Benintendi was selected by the Red Sox in the first round (seventh overall) of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arkansas. Benintendi was ranked by Baseball America as the No. 2 prospect in the Red Sox organization and the No. 9 prospect in all of baseball in their 2016 midseason top prospect list.
