River Cats and Green Acres Nursery & Supply break ground on school garden

After winning community contest, Breen Elementary will receive new garden August 7

West Sacramento, CA - The Sacramento River Cats and Green Acres Nursery & Supply teamed up earlier this season to give a local school the chance to win a brand new community garden. After over a dozen entries and thousands of votes, the River Cats and Green Acres Nursery & Supply will be heading to Breen Elementary School this weekend to break ground on a brand new garden. 

"We're so excited for this weekend," shared River Cats Ross Richards, the Corporate Partnership Manager behind the initial contest, "but the credit really goes to Breen for their inspiring entry and for the support their community showed in wanting to bring in a new garden. They really impressed us and Green Acres Nursery & Supply."

Breen Elementary School, located in Rocklin, CA was selected as one of three finalists out of nearly 20 schools who submitted entries. The finalists were shared online via social media where the communities were given the chance to vote. With nearly 2,400 votes, Breen came in on top and will now receive a brand new school garden courtesy of Green Acres Nursery & Supply.

"It was incredible for us to see the excitement and passion for a new garden at Breen Elementary School," said Tami Kint of Green Acres Nursery & Supply. "Their school community is more than deserving of a garden makeover."

The River Cats and Green Acres Nursery & Supply will break ground on Breen Elementary School's new garden on Sunday, August 7 starting at 8 a.m. Volunteers from the River Cats' Cats Care program and Green Acres Nursery & Supply will be joined by school officials and students to help make this garden a reality. The build is expected to last until noon.

"Our mission is to teach students how to cultivate and appreciate our earth through gardening," wrote Breen Elementary School in their original entry. "We hope to present our students with new knowledge about our earth, and an opportunity you connect with it, watch it grow and feel the pride taken from taking care of something that's important."
