Mobile 6, Carolina 1
After Jose Castro got hit by a pitch in the eighth, former BayBear James Skelton drilled a game-tying double off the right field wall to tie the game 1-1, good for Carolina's first hit of the game. Roemer faced one more batter, with pinch-hitter Kyle Day smacking a drive to deep centerfield before AJ Pollock made a leaping grab racing back toward the warning track to preserve the tie. Roemer was by Bryan Shaw (W, 3-1) replaced with two outs, who escaped the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, the BayBears (21-15) batted around and scored five runs against Lee Tabor (L, 0-2). Pollock began the eighth with a double to right-center and was bunted to third. An intentional walk put Paul Goldschmidt aboard ahead of Ryan Wheeler. Wheeler looped a single to short left-centerfield, and David Cook attempted a diving catch but came up just short. Pollock scored to put Mobile ahead 2-1. After another walk by Tabor, catcher Ed Easley doubled to right field to clear the bases to make it 5-1. The BayBears tacked on another run before the inning closed.
Kyle McCulloch worked four scoreless innings in his second Mudcats start, with Travis Webb allowing just one unearned run over his three innings.
Miguel Rojas came closest to Carolina's first hit back in the second inning, smoking a one-hopper toward left field only to have Taylor Harbin stop it with a dive and convert it into a force out at second base.
The BayBears lead the series 2-1 with the fourth game scheduled for Tuesday night at 8:05 PM ET. James Avery (3-4) starts against Michael Brewer.
