Four Indians Involved in Trade Deadline Deal

Tate ('15), Swanson ('14) and Green ('16) dealt for Carlos Beltran ('96)
August 4, 2016

Spokane, WA - The trade deadline is always a crazy time in the baseball season but it was especially so for a quartet of current and former Spokane Indians players this year. That's because those four players - Carlos Beltran, Dillon Tate, Erik Swanson, and Nick Green - were all involved in the same deal with Tate, Swanson and Green going to the New York Yankees and Beltran heading to the Texas Rangers in a last-minute swap on Monday, August 1.

"I can't think of too many hitters for what we're looking for down the stretch who fit better than Carlos does right now," said Rangers general manager Jon Daniels about Beltran, who suited up for Spokane in 1996 while the franchise was affiliated with the Royals. "You get what you paid for. We got the best available bat and we gave up a good, young talent."

Tate, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2015 draft, made two appearances for the Indians in 2015 while Swanson pitched in 15 games for Spokane in 2014. Green, who was 2-2 with a 4.98 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 34.1 innings, becomes the first player in recent memory to be traded while still part of the team.

"I am excited for the fresh start. It will be nice getting to know some new people," said Green after landing in New York where he will join the Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League. "Spokane was awesome, the fans were great, and the team was lots of fun to be a part of. I was fortunate to have the chance to play there."

Tate and Swanson will join the Charleston RiverDogs where they will compete against their former team, the Hickory Crawdads, while the Rangers will primarily use Beltran at designated hitter as they pursue the franchise's first World Series title.
