River Cats sweep Isotopes in rainy doubleheader
Albuquerque, NM - The Sacramento River Cats (51-61) continued to roll as they swept the Albuquerque Isotopes (48-62) in tonight's double-header and moved to a season-high of six straight wins. The team broke things open late in game one using long ball to win 12-3. Sacramento then turned to small ball to edge out a 3-2 win in game two.
Game One (12-3)
Ty Blach struggled early in this one before settling down to pick up his his Pacific Coast League-leading 12th win. He gave up back-to-back walks to lead off the second and allowed the runner on second to advance to third on an errant throw, but that would be it for his blunders as he found his groove and came just an inning short of another complete game. He allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts across his six innings tonight. Cory Gearrin then came in for his third rehab appearance and quickly shut down the Isotopes with a perfect seventh inning.
Behind the two was a late offensive surge. A four-run fifth was outdone by a five-run seventh featuring a grand slam by Travis Ishikawa. The first-baseman has been exceptional at the plate this past week. Since July 31, he is hitting .550 (11-for-20) with five home runs and 17 RBI.
Ramiro Peña made his return to the River Cats lineup, but took the first pitch he saw - a 95 mph fastball - off his ankle. After appearing to be suffering quite a bit of pain, he was helped off the field by athletic trainer, L.J. Petra.
Game Two (3-2)
Albert Suarez also made his return to the River Cats tonight and seemed comfortable on the mound with his former teammates behind him. He pitched five innings of one-run ball with a walk and three strikeouts before handing over the ball to Matt Reynolds and Jean Machi. The Sacramento closer picked up his eighth save tonight with a superb catch on a smoked comebacker for the final out.
Together, the three pitchers held the Isotopes to 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. In comparison, Sacramento was 3-for-5 in the same situations. Ali Castillo and Ruben Tejada lead the offense in this one, turning to small ball to outscore Albuquerque. They both picked up two hits and an RBI apiece.
The River Cats send Clayton Blackburn (6-7, 4.53) to the mound looking for the series sweep tomorrow. He'll face Isotopes' righty Christian Bergman (1-3, 4.28). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. (PT). The game can be heard live online at rivercats.com.
