Jon Singleton homers in Grizzlies 10-8 loss
The Fresno Grizzlies fell to the Las Vegas 51s 10-8 Saturday night from Cashman Field. Fresno scattered 12 hits, including a three-hit night by Tyler Heineman. He extended the current team-high hit streak to nine games. Fresno reliever Aaron West (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing two runs (earned) in an inning and one-third of work. Las Vegas reliever Luis Mateo (1-0) earned the decision after throwing two and two-third innings, striking out a pair. Both starters took no decisions.
Jon Singleton (2-for-4) gave the Grizzlies a 3-0 lead in the top of the first when he destroyed a three-run homer to right. It was his 17th longball of the season.
The 51s got one run back in the bottom of the first when Johnny Monell lasered a RBI single to left, scoring Gavin Cecchini (4-for-5). After one inning, Fresno led 3-1. Las Vegas evened the score 3-3 in the bottom of the second after Cecchini blooped a RBI single to right, knocking in Kevin Plawecki. Then, a fielder's choice allowed Travis Taijeron to cross home. Roger Bernadina (3-for-4) made it 4-3 in the bottom of the third after he singled sharply to center, scoring T.J. Rivera (3-for-5).
Fresno retook control 6-4 in the top of the fourth when Andrew Aplin spanked a two-run single to center. Then, Colin Moran laced a single to left, scoring Aplin.
Las Vegas added four runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking an 8-6 advantage. Monell grounded out to first, allowing a run to score. Then, Rivera crushed a three-run home run to left. It was his 11th clout of the season.
Singleton cut the deficit to 8-7 in the top of the fifth when he pounded a double off the right-center wall, knocking in Danny Worth (2-for-3). The Grizzlies tied the game 8-8 in the top of the sixth after an errant throw on a double play try by Cecchini netted a run.
The 51s took the lead 10-8 in the bottom of the eighth when Rivera blasted a two-run double to left. Closer Josh Smoker picked up his third save, striking out the side in the ninth.
Fresno travels to El Paso for a four-game set with the Chihuahuas starting Sunday night. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PT. Grizzlies' RHP Mike Hauschild (8-9, 3.12) toes the rubber with Chihuahuas' RHP Bryan Rodriguez (4-5, 5.23).
