Marlins Name Jeff Brigham Minors Pitcher of the Month - July
Congratulations to RHP Jeff Brigham of the Jupiter Hammerheads on being named Miami Marlins Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July 2016. In an honoree of both Brigham and Xavier Scruggs of the New Orleans Zephyrs as player of the month.
Jeff Brigham went 2-0 with a 0.33 ERA in 5 games started in April. Over 27 2/3 innings pitched, he held opponents to a .173 batting average while striking out 31 and walking eight. Brigham, acquired via trade from the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015, was 1st in ERA, 5th in opponent batting average, and 6th in strikeouts in the Florida State League for the month.
Brigham over his last ten ballgames has gone 3-1, with a 1.89 ERA, 55 strikeouts in 52.1 innings pitched and allowed just 11 earned runs in that span. On July 21st, he tallied a season and team high single game strikeout mark of 10 against the Dunedin Blue Jays. He has allowed three or fewer runs in his last 13 appearances on the mound. During the month of July, Brigham, allowed just one earned run in four starts and five appearances.
During the course of three consecutive outings, Jeff Brigham struck out seven batters against the Bradenton Marauders (PIT), Palm Beach Cardinals (STL) and Tampa Yankees (NYY). One of the more impressive pitching performances by a Hammerhead was his relief appearance against the Tampa Yankees on July 10th. Brigham worked four innings, struck out seven batters, did not allow a hit or a run as he synched his first and only save of the season.
Jeff Brigham makes his 18th start of the season tonight at 6:30 PM inside Roger Dean Stadium as the Hammerheads host the Charlotte Stone Crabs for a three game series, who sit just a-half game behind the Hammerheads in the playoff race. Jupiter is currently one game out of 1st place in the Southern Division, chasing the St. Lucie Mets, of whom Jupiter travels to face this coming Sunday and Monday.
The Hammerheads joust for positioning in the playoff picture with three straight series against potential playoff contenders, St. Lucie, Charlotte and Fort Myers. Jupiter has begun the month of August at 2-3, with big wins over St. Lucie, but as well as a series sweep at the hands of Dunedin. 28 games left in the season for the Jupiter Hammerheads as we swim toward a conclusion.
