Emeralds giveth and taketh away; C's fall 4-3

Vancouver gets pair of runs in top of 9th to draw even only to give Eugene a way out with run in bottom of inning

(PK Park - Eugene, OR) - Canadians manager John Tamargo Jr. was ejected near the midway point of Monday's game as the frustration began to sink in for a Vancouver team that was on the verge of droppings its 13th game in the past 17. Trailing 3-1 heading to the 9th inning, the Canadians would get a pair of runs gifted to them on a throwing error to even the game at 3-3. Seconds later, Eugene would rip back the hope of victory with an RBI double from Tyler Payne, scoring Sam Tidabeck, giving the Emeralds a 4th straight win over the Canadians.

Vancouver (20-29) opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd inning when Cavan Biggio smacked a single to left field that brought home D.J. McKnight (walk) giving the Canadians a 1-0 lead.

That lead would hold until the bottom of the 5th inning when Vancouver starter Luis Sanchez ran into trouble allowing the first four hitters of the inning to reach base including Wladimir Galindo who hit his 10th double of the season to left field, scoring Yeiler Peguero (single) that chased Sanchez from the game and gave Eugene a 2-1 lead.

After the Emeralds tacked on a run in the bottom of the 6th inning, Vancouver was down to its final two outs with both Cavan Biggio and Nash Knight grabbing bases hits off of Eugene reliever Dakota Mekkes, who got Bryan Lizardo to hit a one out ground ball back to him before the pitcher sailed his throw past first baseman Chris Pieters allowing both Biggio and Knight to score evening the game at 3-3, giving the Canadians hope of snapping its current three-game losing streak.

That hope was dashed just seconds later in the bottom of the 9th when Canadians reliever Nick Hartman allowed a two-out single back up the middle off the bat of Sam Tidabeck who scored on a double off the bat of Tyler Payne sending the determined Emeralds crowd into a frenzy as the Emeralds bolted from its dugout with Payne hitting the walkoff double as Tidabeck crossed home plate securing the 4-3 victory.

With the loss, Vancouver falls to 4-7 on the second half of the Northwest League season, three full games back of North Division leading Everett who comes to Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium starting Tuesday (August 9) for a crucial three-game series that goes through August 11th.
