August 10, 2016

Quickly working his way up in the minor league baseball ranks, 2015 Black Bears' alum RHP Edgar Santana has dominated opposing offenses since his playing days in the New York-Penn League. After going 1-3, posting a 3.66 ERA with the Dominican Summer League Pirates in 2014, the Puerto Plata D.R. native began the 2015 campaign with the West Virginia Black Bears. For the Black Bears, Santana was tremendous on the mound going 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA, fanning 32 batters through 30 innings pitched.

On August 9, 2015, he was promoted to the Class A level with the West Virginia Power. His success continued in his short stint in the South Atlantic League where he fanned 16 hitters through 12 innings with a 4.38 ERA. The right-hander was a part of the Power's postseason run in the Northern Division Championship series.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound right-hander began the 2016 season with the Bradenton Marauders at the Class A-Advanced level. Santana was outstanding in the Florida State league going 2-0 with a 0.81 ERA, striking out 20 hitters in 22.1 innings. After nine appearances with the Marauders, he was promoted to Double-A Altoona on May 10. With his play on the mound, Santana helped guide the Curve into first place in the Western Division of the Eastern League. In 21 appearances, Santana went 2-1, posting a 2.83 ERA while fanning 39 batters in 41.1 innings of work.

Rapidly rising through the Pirates organization at the age of 24, he was called-up by Triple-A Indianapolis on August 1. Since his promotion, Santana has made four appearances with the Indians this season allowing one earned run over 3.2 innings with three strikeouts. His most recent outing was against the Buffalo Bisons on August 10 where he threw the eighth inning scoreless.
