Frogs Win Fifth Straight Behind Newsome

All-Star Ljay Newsome had his best start of the second half on Friday

EVERETT, Wash. - On Friday night in Everett, the AquaSox honored Ken Griffey Jr. by retiring his number, 24, in accordance to the Seattle Mariners' decision to retire Griffey's number throughout the entire organization. Also, the first 1,000 fans took home a collectable Ken Griffey Jr. Bobblehead, presented by Sound Transit. The Frogs road the momentum of the special night to a fifth straight victory, 7-2 over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. Ljay Newsome (5-2) delivered his strongest outing of the second half, tossing 6 2/3 innings while allowing one run on two hits.The AquaSox improved to 11-4 in the second half and won their fifth straight game in front of a robust crowd of 3,467 at Everett Memorial Stadium.

 

The AquaSox took advantage of two errors by Salem-Keizer second baseman, Kevin Rivera, to jump out to an early lead. Nick Zammarelli later delivered a sacrifice fly to score Eric Filia, increasing the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the first.

 

Salem-Keizer responded in the top of the second with a solo home run off the bat of Gio Brusa, making the score 2-1 AquaSox.

 

Heads-up baserunning gave the AquaSox a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Jose Leal scored from second base on an infield single off the bat of Bryson Brigman.

 

A throwing error by the Volcanoes increased Everett's lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth. After being picked off third, Austin Grebeck scored due to a ball hitting his helmet as he ran to home plate.

 

Everett padded their lead in the bottom of the sixth, making it 7-1 AquaSox. First, Austin Grebeck hit an RBI single scoring Nick Thurman. Bryson Brigman followed with a two-run double scoring Jose Leal and Grebeck.

 

Salem-Keizer mounted a threat in the top of the ninth against reliever Michael Koval. Despite loading the bases with only one out, the only run Koval allowed was on a Ryan Kirby RBI ground out, bringing the final score to 7-2 AquaSox.

 

Bryson Brigman, Jhombeyker Morales and Donnie Walton all collected two hits. Brigman hit in three of the seven Everett runs.
