McGrath Tabbed Carolina League Pitcher of the Week
SALEM, Va. (August 22, 2016) - Salem Red Sox pitcher Daniel McGrath was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for August 15-21, the league announced on Monday. It is the second weekly honor for the fourth year pro.
In his only start of the week, McGrath absolutely dominated the Carolina Mudcats on Wednesday. He allowed a leadoff triple to the first batter he faced before encountering the minimum afterwards. It marked the second start of at least eight innings this season for McGrath, matching a career-long outing.
He gave up one run on the single hit, walking two and striking out five. Of the three runners to reach after the leadoff triple, one was picked off while the others were erased on double plays. McGrath only needed 92 pitches to toss eight phenomenal innings.
With the strong performance, the 22-year-old lowered his season ERA to 3.96 in 16 starts. It was also McGrath's third straight winning decision, improving to 7-5 on the year. He is scheduled to start Tuesday's series opener at Potomac.
McGrath was signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in 2012 out of Templestowe, Victoria, Australia. He returned to finish schooling in Australia before making his professional debut in 2013. Now in his second year with Salem, McGrath missed just under two months with a knee injury before returning to the mound in late May.
Salem, winners of a Red Sox-era record 10 straight games, returns to the field on Tuesday night against the Potomac Nationals at Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge, Va. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm with pregame coverage starting at 6:45 pm on salemsox.com/broadcast.
