Meet the rest of the Blue Jays affiliates

The road to Rogers Centre has some pretty neat twists and turns
May 30, 2011
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - For the past decade, fans of the Vancouver Canadians have known the 'Road to the Show' to include the likes of Kane County, Illinois, Stockton, California, Midland, Texas and Sacramento, California. That road for the past decade has always led to Oakland, home of the Athletics.

But as we embark on our new journey with the Toronto Blue Jays, let's take a look at the stops between Vancouver and the bright lights of Roger's Centre.

AAA - Las Vegas 51's - Pacific Coast League

If you've ever stayed in Las Vegas in one of the countless hotels anywhere near 'The Strip', you've surely peered out your window to see a never ending stream of airplanes are arriving full of people that are dreaming big and hoping to strike it even bigger.

For those within the Blue Jays organization, the thought is pretty much the same. Just one step away from the Major Leagues, players like Adam Loewen, Brett Lawrie and Brett Cecil all close their eyes at night and dream of tomorrow being the day the phone rings and 'the call' comes for them to head to Toronto.

What are some of the things you might not have known about baseball in Las Vegas?

The 51's are named after the famous 'Area 51' which has long been a part of US military lore as the venue that houses all extraterrestrial matter found on our planet.

Beyond the aliens and conspiracy theories, the 51's play out of Cashman Field in Las Vegas which holds just over 9,000 fans on any given night.

Las Vegas has been home to a pair of Pacific Coast League Championships (1986 and 1988) and has been affiliated with both the San Diego Padres (1983-2000) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (2001-2008) before pairing up with the Blue Jays.

It gets hot. I mean, real hot. So much so that on occasion the Blue Jays will opt to send a player to Double-A New Hampshire so that they don't have to send a player with shaky hands and perhaps a lack of confidence onto the baked clay at Cashman Field where the ball comes at you faster than a pair of aces at the poker table.

There is talk of a new baseball stadium in Las Vegas but there is work to be done to get that shovel into the ground.

AA - New Hampshire Fisher Cats - Eastern League

Where is New Hampshire? Don't worry, I didn't know either exploiting my poor geographical skills.

New Hampshire and the city of Manchester is way up in the Northeastern corner of the United States just north of Boston. It is one of the most beautiful parts of North America with a rugged terrain and lakes stuffed with fish.

It is considered as part of 'New England'.

The Fisher Cats play in the Eastern League and last won a championship in 2004. Playing out of Northeast Delta Dental Stadium, the ballpark seats 6,500 fans comfortably.

Toronto has no problem sending their high-end talent to New Hampshire and giving them the call to 'The Show' straight from the Eastern League. Right now, manager Sal Fasano has a handful of players who could all make the jump if need be including catcher Travis d'Arnaud, Zach Stewart and Anthony Gose - all major players within the Jays organization.

Something I bet you didn't know? Saturday Night Live's Adam Sandler was raised in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Class-A Advanced - Dunedin Blue Jays - Florida State League

Dunedin is the home to the Blue Jays Spring Training facility known as Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. The ballpark seats around 5,500 and can lay claim to being the place where countless Blue Jays have honed their craft as Toronto has never, ever called another city other than Dunedin 'home'.

The Florida State League Blue Jays have been formidable as of late winning a pair of division championships (2006, 2008) and have an active hand in the community.

In 2007, the Dunedin Blue Jays were nominated for the Corporate Support Award, which is awarded annually by the Florida Recreation & Park Association to an organization that goes above and beyond to support and fund recreational programming.

Currently, but not for long, Jays prospect Deck McGuire calls Dunedin home.

Things you might need to know prior to heading to Dunedin? It gets hot, real hot.

88 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit is what these future Blue Jays ensure on a daily basis. Plenty of suntan lotion and water are usually on the daily order while playing in this league.

Class-A - Lansing Lugnuts - Midwest League

Lansing is located in Michigan and is a powerhouse of an organization that draws as much as any affiliate within the Blue Jays ladder.

Playing out of Cooley Law School Stadium, the ballpark seats just over 7,500, but you can add as many as 6,000 additional spaces if you count the huge lawn that fans can set up shop on beyond the outfield fence.

The Lugnuts have been with the Blue Jays as an affiliate since 2005 and were with the Cubs (1999-2004) and Kansas City Royals (1996-1998) prior.

The last time the Lugnuts raised a division title was back in 2008 as Lansing won the first half pennant in the Midwest League.

Something I bet you didn't know about Lansing, Michigan?

The city's population is 114,297 making it the fifth largest city in the state of Michigan. That number swells on game day as fans flock to cheer on the Michigan State Spartans of the NCAA.

Who's from Lansing? The city can lay claim to a virtual smorgasbord of celebrities. How about former Braves ace John Smoltz, UFC fighter Rashad Evans, Lakers legend Magic Johnson, the late Malcolm X, Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres, film legend Burt Reynolds and Steven Seagal.

What? Steven Seagal is not a celebrity? That's news to me.

Rookie - Bluefield Blue Jays - Appalachian League

As the Vancouver Canadians begin a new chapter within the Blue Jays ladder, so too does Bluefield. Located in Virginia, the Blue Jays of Bluefield are members of the Appalachian League. For fans of Bluefield, this whole Blue Jays affiliation might take a while to get used to after spending the past 53 years with the Baltimore Orioles.

That era of 53 years marks the longest consecutive affiliation between a minor league and major league franchise in MLB history.

Yes, they housed Cal Ripken Jr. but they also can lay claim to being the summer home of the great Boog Powell who helped the Orioles to a pair of World Series titles back in 1966 and 1970.

Facts about Bluefield? You might need a few as perhaps a handful of future Vancouver Canadians will get shipped up from Virginia.

Bluefield was the background for the 1990's remake of the classic movie 'Lassie'. As well, NFL Hall of Famer Bill Dudley is from Bluefield as is New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw.

No one should remake 'Lassie'.

So there it is, the rest of the road between Vancouver and Roger's Centre. Sounds like it would be a heck of a roadtrip, but more importantly a journey that many of our Vancouver Canadians hope to make in the coming months.
