Bats surge past Knights, 7-2
Louisville, KY - The Louisville Bats opened up their three game set against the Charlotte Knights with a 7-2 win on Monday night. The win was Louisville's sixth against Charlotte, and was highlighted by home runs from catcher Chris Berset and second baseman Dilson Herrera.
Shortstop Carlos Triunfel got the scoring started in the second inning, when his RBI double scored first baseman Seth Mejias-Brean. Triunfel scored two batters later on a Berset single, and Louisville led 2-0.
Herrera's second home run as a Bat came in the third inning, and it upped the Louisville lead to 3-0.
Charlotte closed to within one when center fielder Adam Engel hit a two-run shot, making it 3-2 Bats in the fifth.
Louisville responded in the bottom half when third baseman Tony Renda worked a leadoff walk and scored on a Mejias-Brean RBI single to right field. The Bats led 4-2 after five innings.
In the bottom of the sixth, Triunfel collected his second double of the game and scored on a Berset RBI single. Berset scored two batters later on a Renda base hit, and Louisville led 6-2.
Berset rounded off the scoring with a solo home run to left field, his second of the season, making it 7-2 Bats.
Left hander Cody Reed got the start for the Bats. He went two and one-third innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. Righty Dayan Diaz (6-1, 3.33) earned the win in relief with two scoreless innings, collecting a pair of strikeouts.
Left hander David Holmberg (1-3, 4.20) took the loss. He pitched five innings, allowing six hits and four runs (all earned), walking two and striking out three.
The Bats look to win the series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at Louisville Slugger Field. Right hander Daniel Wright (5-5, 6.18) will go for Louisville. Charlotte will counter with righty Terrance Marin (7-6, 4.87).
