Medina Dominate As Offense Erupts
WILLIAMSPORT -- Adonis Medina returned to form and the Cutters offense erupted as the Crosscutters cruised to a 10-3 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in the middle-game of the three-game set at BB&T Ballpark.
Luis Encarnacion got the scoring started for the Crosscutters, as the DH drilled a three-run home run over the left-center wall in the bottom of the 2nd inning to give the Cutters an early 3-0 lead. It was Encarnacion's 2nd home run of the season and gave him his 13th RBI of the year.
Darick Hall added on to the Cutters early lead with a two-run double down the 1st base line into right field that extended the Williamsport lead to 5-0. It was the 18th double of the season for Hall, who picked up his 23rd RBI on the year.
The Scrappers were able to chip away against Adonis Medina, scoring a run in each of the 5th and the 6th inning to bring the Cutters lead down to three, at 5-2.
Adonis Medina snapped a six-start win-less streak, allowing a pair of runs, both earned, on five hits and two walks. Medina struck out a season-high seven Scrappers batters over his six innings of work.
Enmanuel Garcia sparked a five-run 7th with his two-run home run over the wall in left. It was Garcia's 4th home run of the season and 3rd against the Scrappers this season. The blast gave Garcia 12th RBI of the year and extended the Cutters lead to 7-2.
Brett Barbier followed Garcia's blast with a double high off the left field wall. Luke Williams plated Barbier with a double to right-center to give the Cutters an 8-2 lead.
Williams was chased home as Chandler Hall rifled a double into left-center to give the Cutters a 9-2 lead.
Williamsport took advantage of a Scrappers error to cap their scoring on the night. Luis Encarnacion chased a Ping-Hsueh Chen breaking ball in the dirt that got away from catcher Jack Goihl. Goihl picked up the baseball in foul ground and over threw Emmanuel Tapia at 1st base.
Chandler Hall scored on the error as Encarnacion went to 3rd base on the play. The Cutters took a 10-2 lead into the 8th inning.
Mahoning Valley added a run against Alex Kline in the top of the 9th inning, but the Cutters reliever was able to keep the Scrappers at bay.
After the Cutters bullpen was taxed in game one, Alex Kline was masterful, allowing one run, unearned, over three innings of relief en route to his third save of the season. Kline finished the night, allowing one hit and striking out two.
Jesus Alastre, Enmanuel Garcia, Brett Barbier and Luke Williams each recorded a two hits apiece as the Cutters pounded out 12 hits in the win.
Williamsport concludes their three-game series with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
