CHARLESTON, S.C. - The exploits of professional baseball players are heroic to many fans, but their athletic feats pale in comparison to the valiant job firefighters fulfill on a daily basis. Firefighters make a livelihood by putting their own lives on the line, and the Charleston RiverDogs and ServiceMaster are proud to extend a thank you to these brave men and women.

On Thursday, June 2, Charleston's favorite professional sports team will play host to the annual Tri-County Firefighter Appreciation Night, as the RiverDogs entertain the Rome Braves at 7:05 p.m.

All volunteer fire departments in Charleston and the surrounding area will receive free tickets to that night's game, thanks to the RiverDogs partnership with Lawton Hayes and the great people of ServiceMaster.

"Firefighter Appreciation Night is always a special time during the season where we get the chance to show our debt of gratitude for the Lowcountry's bravest," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. "Firefighters are an integral part of the fabric of the community, and we are honored to allow them to 'Be Your Own Fan' and enjoy some baseball."

Pregame and in-game promotions ensure that the Charleston faithful will have ample opportunity to shower the local heroes with praise.

The firefighters of the year from Charleston, North Charleston and Mt. Pleasant will all be honored prior to the first pitch. Always popular, the sumo competition will have a special twist, as firefighters square off for a trophy which will be awarded to the winning firehouse.

A frozen t-shirt contest should also have the firefighters scrambling, as they race to unwrap the t-shirts and claim a Weber grill for comrades at their respective firehouse.

While fans are enjoying the RiverDogs and the in-between inning promotions, they will also have the occasion to lend a hand to a great cause. Firefighters will be stationed at gates around the ballpark with boots in hand, collection donations which will go directly to MUSC's Pediatric Burn Unit.

The alliance with ServiceMaster and MUSC's Pediatric Burn Unit is nothing new, as recyclables collected all season long will also go toward benefiting the center.

As a special treat, local hit recording artist Eddie Bush will be back on hand to deliver the National Anthem as a keynote to the evening's festivities. Patrons will want to arrive early so they can catch a glimpse of Charlie T. RiverDog's dramatic entrance on ServiceMaster's NASCAR show car.
